Flemington Tips January 13

Race 1 - 12:13PM All Jockeys Dash Tips (1000m)

Best: 4. Salsa Fellow. He's been the best mover among the first starters from the jumpouts, although I'm not sure that equates to a 1000m debut win (looking for further?).

By Blue Point and out of a Listed winning mare in She Goes To Rio, Salsa Fellow won his first jump out on December 11 and the first two pulled away in that Ballarat heat.

He was kept under a firm hold when third via her most recent hit out and in a competitive betting affair, she has been backed in the early markets.

Value: 6. Cool Star. Being prepared by a small stable that generally train middle-distance/staying types. Two Star is long odds in this juvenile affair, but her lead-up work has been fine.

After a quiet first hit-out when well held for third in a 650m heat, the daughter of Stratum Star was more prominent when closing off over 800m via her latest.

Without any standouts for this 1000m dash, it's hard to put a line through any of these, which includes the outsider of the field.

Race 2 - 12:48PM National Jockeys Trust Trophy Tips (2000m)

Best: 7. Arugamama. Well she hasn't beaten much via her hat-trick in Adelaide, this mare has well and truly put a bridesmaids tag to bed in that recent winning run.

It's also worth noting that Arugamama was stakes placed twice last season over the Adelaide Carnival and she's improved with racing this prep as the trips have increased.

A half-sister to Pretty Punk (Group 3 winner), she might be on the same path as her older sibling (Tassie Carnival) but she needs to win this very weak affair to warrant that trip.

Value: Mr Blackwood. He's still lightly raced for a six-year-old and is coming off a career-best prep, where he won to metro level last autumn at Sandown.

Mr Blackwood went 1400m to 2040m second-up and although he was never a winning contention via that Moonee Valley attempt, it was an improved showing.

It's a modest affair considering the benchmark, so I wouldn't be looking all that much into the rise in grade and down in the weights, he can settle closer from a low draw.

Race 3 - 1:23PM Victorian Jockeys Association Trophy Tips (1400m)

Best: 3. Otago. He survived a little betting drift to take out a Bendigo maiden in nice style on debut, while the form has been frank strongly from that December 17 affair.

Both place-getters (Sparkling and The Autumn Belle) won their next starts by big margins and that bodes well for this son of Ocean Park, who still did a bit wrong there.

A half-brother to three New Zealand stakes winners, Otago is suited to staying on a big circuit and he has natural improvement to come from at start two.
Value: 2. High Security. He continues to improve with racing despite being deep into his first prep now and he performed well over this track/trip on New Year's Day after a maiden win.

After being eased back to early in that fourth-up tilt, High Security was briefly held up before getting home for third and he recorded the fastest closing splits of that race.

He placed behind a pair of dual winners in that last outing, so the form looks okay and he's an each-way contender at a fair quote.

Race 4 - 1:58PM Readiness App Sprint Tips (1000m)

Best: 9. Princess Annalise. An interesting galloper is this resuming mare, who hasn't been seen since the winter of 2022 when defeated in a Sandown BM70 on heavy ground.

Princess Annalise had won her two starts before that, having saluted easily debut despite doing plenty wrong before a stylish Cranbourne win in a strong BM64.

While she's obviously had plenty of issues being such a lightly raced six-year-old, her lead-up work ahead of this return has been faultless and this isn't a strong race.

Value: 4. Chester Warrior. He saluted for us at a big price first-up before failing in a Magic Millions event on Ballarat Cup Day, where the four-year-old struggled on a Heavy 9 surface.

The form continues to stack up from that Ballarat race, with two subsequent metro winners along with Spicy Margs, who was second to a smart one last week.

Back in trip is no knock after tiring light over 1200m here last start and that winner has since one again at BM70 level, which should measure up here.

Race 5 - 2:33PM The Stud And Stable Staff Awards Tips (2000m)

Best: 9. Girls Girls Girls. We were with this filly at start two and while she had to settle for second in that Boxing Day event, Girls Girls Girls lost no admirers there.

After recording this second-fastest last 400m of the Bendigo card on December 5, she ran the best closing splits in that Caulfield race and the bigger surroundings at Flemington look ideal.

Andrew Bobbin appears to have a progressive stayer via this daughter of Fiorente, who should continue to improve with racing and the 2000m is positive here.
Value: 8. Crossoverkid. I feel this gelding is sneaking under the radar at a big price, a galloper who performed well via his December 3 debut despite doing plenty wrong.

Crossoverkid bounced off that first outing with an eye-catching second over the Bendigo 1500m and he gives the impression that he'll eat up 2000m on Saturday.

He recorded the second fastest last 400m of that December 18 card, so he's not exactly a one-paced plodder and he could jump out of the ground over this trip.

Race 6 - 3:08PM Jockey Acknowledgement Plate Tips (1600m)

Best: 5. Dane On Tour. After putting the writing on the wall with a lovely return at Sandown in what was effectively a barrier trial, she saluted over 1300m second-up.

She was giving away race fitness to Apertivo in that December 14 event and after that rival briefly challenged, Dane On Tour then pulled away late.

This is a little harder now BM78 level, however, she stays down on the weights and the five-year-old appears to be in career-best touch.

Value: 6. Harmonious Senora. She's been somewhat hit-or-miss over 10 career starts and there was an opinion of her early when going to a stakes race after a debut win.

Harmonious Senora arrives in winning form, with the four-year-old denying Magarten at Seymour last up and that rival had decent form over last season.

With 3kg less as a result of the rise in grade, she still looks well enough placed against her own sex, where the rise to a mile suits at this stage of the prep.

Race 7 - 3:43PM Honouring Our Jockeys Plate Tips (1400m)

Best: 9. Bullet Wing. I've got plenty of time for Punch Lane, but the wide gates leaves his map a little sticky, while Green Belt is resuming off a massive layoff.

In a no-confidence race and with queries around those favs, another speck on Bullet Wing isn't the worst at a huge price in the opening leg of the Flemington Quaddie.

With some decent form lines, we gave him a sniff first-up at a monster quote, where he whacked away fairly well and the form has been franked from that December 16 event.

Value: 3. El Rocko. He's never the most reliable winning proposition, but he's often thereabouts and with a softer draw ever more suitable trip, El Rocko isn't hopeless here.

Not much was expected first-up over the Moonee Valley 1200m, where he did sustain a wide run to make some inroads and this setup is more favourable.

Without winning last year, he was still competitive in some handy enough races, with the performances behind Here To Shock and Brayden Star good enough for this.

Race 8 - 4:28PM Standish Handicap Tips (1200m)

Best: 2. Sghirripa. He's shorter odds this time around and now up the straight, he's perhaps not the betting proposition he was at Caulfield last start, although this is no stronger.

Craig Newitt took the reins on Sghirripa in the Christmas Stakes and he delivered a pearler in that Boxing Day feature, while he only goes up half a kilo off that.

The South Australian has put together a tidy record despite being quite raw and while this is a very different scenario, he goes on top somewhat by default.

Value: 3. Treasured Star. She was a stakes winner over 1400m and 1600m in the W\west, but she was proven effective over shorter trips via her earlier performances.

Treasured Star arrives off jump out win at Pakenham, where she was given a solid hit-out and in a small field up the straight, the mare will aim to blend in late.

This is very weak for Group 3 standards and as the fresh horse on the scene, who is also the least exposed runner in the field, a forward showing wouldn't shock.

Race 9 - 5:13PM Off The Track Trophy Tips (1600m)

Best: 3. Miracle Spin. With a satellite Victorian yard to complement his Sydney operation,  it allows Matthew Smith to move his horses between both states with ease.

This appears to be astute placement third-up with the consistent Miracle Spin, who bounced off a nice return to bolt in over the Randwick mile on December 30.

While he's technically up in grade a little, this looks weaker if anything and with that last start affair having already produced a subsequent winner, he can go on with it here.
Value: 6. Real Sensation. There's a shade more depth of this BM84 compared to the one that he took out last start at Moonee Valley, but Real Sensation is clearly going well.

After running into a very smart Plenty Of Ammo fresh, he handled a four-day back-up with ease when saluting on December 30 and he's only third up here.

He hasn't always been the easiest horse to catch over the journey, although in a race that falls away a fair bit after the fav, he's at least a top-three hope.

Race 10 - 5:48PM Jockey Assistance Program Plate Tips (1200m)

Best: 5. Turf Decision. I'm interested to see how this South Australian visitor goes second-up, a five-year-old who has a brilliant turn-of-foot and the step to 1200m is ideal.

The Damian Lane engagement also takes the eye with Turf Decision, who rattled home with the fastest last 200m of the entire December 23 program from Murray Bridge.

He finished alongside Validated in 1000m dash and that galloper has been in decent form all campaign, which includes a fourth here in Listed grade on January 1.

Value: 10. Shove Over. His last two victories have come over seven furlongs, however, the prior three victories from Shove Over were all in the 1100m-1200m range.

His last look up at the Flemington straight course resulted in a three-length defeat behind Benedetta last August, which reads well enough for this BM78.

This gelding was terrific in his last jump-out behind a flying Rey Magnerio, who landed big bets when continuing his winning run at Geelong last Saturday.
