Flemington Tips for April 25
William Newton VC Handicap Tips (Race 1)
Flemington Best Bet - Race 1 No. 1 Persan
This should be a case of short and sweet with the Melbourne Cup fifth place getter returning to his favourite track for the first time since that effort.
He was a great winner first-up on All-Star Mile day before toughing it out in the Easter Cup at Caulfield, finishing a narrow second.
By not winning that race, it allows him to get into this with 61kg minus the 3kg claim of Matt Cartwright, making him very well in at the weights.
His record speaks for itself, especially at Flemington where he has won four times, so he should be marching into the Andrew Ramsden after this run.
VRC St Leger Tips (Race 6)
Flemington Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 3 Through Irish Eyes
This boy looks a proper stayer, except not the natural dour stayer we have seen in recent years, he has a turn of foot which is exciting.
He finished second last start in the Galilee Final to Liquero who would be winning this race if he were here, but prior to that he dashed away over 2200m from Tictoc Tictoc who he meets again.
The big track of Flemington looks as if it will suit him down to the ground, while he kept finding the line last start, looking as if the 2800m is no worry.
Since the blinkers have gone on, he has become a very good horse, so happy to be sticking with him in this event.
The Les Carlyon Tips (Race 7)
Flemington Value Bet - Race 7 No. 8 Vassilator
He is a handy galloper this five-year-old gelding, running very well as always in the Golden Mile last start at Bendigo, coming from near last on the bend.
His runs have been spaced as he has sustained a long preparation, but he seems to have come up at a big price in a race full of stayers while he has the runs on the board.
Damien Oliver seems to be a jockey who gets the best out him, unlucky not to win the Chester Manifold when aboard.
He loves Flemington and being so consistent, he looks worthy of an each-way bet in a race with no stand out selections.
