U&U Recruitment Benchmark 70 Handicap Tips (Race 1)
Doomben Value Bet - Race 1 No. 6 Thesecondatportsea
Jack Bruce’s mare demonstrated good form earlier this prep including when finishing strongly having raced from off the pace in winning at Sunshine Coast in April.
The pick shaped as if a step up in distance would suit when successful over 1800m in a Class 3 handicap held on a heavy 8 surface on that occasion.
The five-year-old has been racing on quicker going since including when narrowly beaten in a Benchmark 78 handicap held over 1666m at Ipswich in July.
Returning from over two months off the track the mare was held up nearing the turn when racing on a good 4 track that day.
The selection followed that good second place finish up with a close fourth in a similar event over 1600m at Sunshine Coast.
While the daughter of Churchill failed to shine when tenth here last time she was inconvenienced at the start and can be forgiven that below par effort.
Ladbrokes Own Spring Class 6 Plate Tips (Race 5)
Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 7 Atmosphere
The son of Lonhro returned from a spell with a narrow victory in an 1100m Class 3 set weights contest on a soft 5 track in June.
The selection went on to deliver a third when beaten less than a length in a similar contest held over this course and distance the following month.
The five-year-old lost out by less than a length that day and met trouble in running when sixth over 1200m on a good 4 surface subsequently.
The pick usually races from the front as was the case when narrowly beaten stepped up to 1400m for an open handicap at Sunshine Coast last time.
The gelding jumped from widest of all in an eight-horse field that day and he will again jump from a wide barrier in this event.
Apprentice Emily Lang boasts a near 29% strike-rate (4/14) when riding for handler Jack Bruce and the pair look capable of improving on that with a win here.
Bundaberg Rum Open Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Doomben Roughie - Race 8 No. 7 Shopping Esprit
The eight-year-old has demonstrated a liking for this venue in the past winning twice here last year including in a 1615m Benchmark 85 handicap on good 4 track.
The softer going expected here is no issue with the pick having performed well on wet tracks in the past including when third in an Eagle Farm Benchmark 90 handicap over 1600m in January.
The gelding failed to shine when last of ten over 1410m in a Benchmark 100m event at Flemington at the start of last month but he has improved for his first start back in each of his last two preps.
The selection tracked the speed at Flemington having been slowly away as is often the case with the winner and a number of the beaten horses running well in the interim.
The return to Brisbane is a positive here and with improvement expected he may prove capable of springing a surprise jumping from barrier twelve.
Eureka Stud Benchmark 78 Handicap Tips (Race 9)
Doomben Best Bet - Race 9 No. 6 Victory Win
The gelding boasts a good record over this distance having won twice and placed second once from his four starts.
All three of those top three finishes have come this prep including when winning by just over a length in a Benchmark 70 handicap here two weeks ago.
The selection picked up in impressive fashion when challenging wide when racing on a soft 5 surface that day.
That softer ground should prove no issue in this event with the pick’s first success this prep coming on the forecast soft 6 going at Sunshine Coast in June.
The son of Santos raced behind the speed at Sunshine Coast and he is tactically versatile having been ridden from off the pace prior to being switched wide when winning last time out.
Jag Guthmann-Chester, on board last time out is again set to ride here and he looks up to steering Anabel Neasham & Rob Archibald’s representative to victory.
