Cranbourne Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Roguery

Both of the three-year-old’s win last prep came over around 2000m and with that in mind it was no surprise to see him beaten over 1400m at Sandown first up.

The gelding came home four-and-a-half-length seventh in a Benchmark 64 handicap held on a good 4 track that day.

Trained by Lloyd Kennewell & Lucy Yeomans the pick took a step forward when fifth over 1500m at Bendigo subsequently prior to a win over this track and trip May 10.

That course and distance success, which came in a Benchmark 64 handicap came on his first start on a wet track since breaking his maiden at Tatura in September.

The second and sixth that day have both won since and while the selection disappointed at Flemington subsequently he should find this contest easier.

The return to the soft going forecast is in his favour and returning to this venue he is selected to return to defy top weight.

The presence of a number of possible pace angles in this fields means this contest may well be set up for a closer.

Matthew Smith’s filly fits the bill in that regard having registered some solid efforts from off the pace in four starts this prep.

While the daughter of Zoustar has been unable to salute in those four starts she registered her best effort when third over this distance at Seymour May 31.

The selection was beaten just over three lengths when contesting a Benchmark 64 handicap over 1000m that day and she tackles a similar contest here.

The four-year-old did best of those racing from off the pace on that occasion and she has finished in the first three in four of her six starts on soft tracks.

Winona Costin’s mount gets in off a nice racing weight here and she may prove up to surprising for a stable who have been in the winners in recent times.

The New Zealand-bred gelding broke his maiden on a soft 6 track at Echuca in July last year and has been in good form since resuming here in April.

While the pick could finish only sixth at this venue that day it’s of note that he was racing over an inadequate 1300m on that occasion.

The four-year-old has registered good efforts in all three subsequent starts placing second twice before saluting when wearing blinkers for the first time last time out.

Ciaron Maher’s representative raced over 1600m at Swan Hill last time with the son of Savabeel being keen in the race and losing a plate.

The blinkers worn that day are retained here and while he won on a good 4 track that day he has gone well on soft and heavy surfaces in the past.

An inside alley should give jockey John Allen options with regard to tactics and his mount looks capable of completing a double.

The gelding registered a good second-place finish in a 1200m handicap held on a soft 6 track at this circuit in November.

The son of Rubick went on to back that up with a second in a small field Benchmark 64 handicap at Sandown four days later.

The selection was spelled following that Sandown effort and he began awkwardly when keeping on nicely in behind when fifth over 1100m at Caulfield first up.

The three-year-old raced from off the pace following that awkward start with his best efforts last prep coming when ridden prominently.

Mick Price & Michael Kent’s gelding was slowly away when fourth over 1200m in a similar race to this at Pakenham at the end of last month.

The plan had been to ride the pick closer to the speed last time and granted a clean start he is value to register a victory stepping up slightly in distance.
