Cranbourne Tips May 3

De Bortoli Wines 2yo Fillies Maiden Plate Tips (Race 1)

Cranbourne Roughie - Race 1 No. 5 Royal Lass

The filly is one of just five in the field with previous race experience having debuted at Bendigo April 21.

The selection showed signs of inexperience having been slowly away and raced from off the pace early on as a result that day.

While she lacked a turn of foot in the straight she demonstrated ability in finishing a good fifth, beaten less than four lengths over 1100m that day.

The pick jumped from a wide barrier on that occasion and she is expected to have improved for that experience.

The step up to 1200m here looks likely to suit and her breeding offers hope with regard to wet tracks being out of a mare who was a multiple winner on soft going.

Tahlia Hope, on board at Bendigo is again in the saddle and jumping from barrier five the pair may prove up to upsetting some better-fancied rivals.

Melbourne Civil Group BM70 Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Cranbourne Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Berkshire Breeze

The five-year-old showed plenty of ability when trained in the UK registering a number of placed efforts prior to winning twice at Lingfield in early 2023.

The gelding joined Ciaron Maher’s team subsequently registering a solid seventh in a Benchmark 90 handicap on the Melbourne Cup undercard.

The selection raced over a 1400m distance that on previous form is short of his best and he was spelled following that effort.

The switch to a soft 5 track and step up to 2000m saw the gelding beaten less than half-a-length dropped to a Benchmark 70 handicap at Caulfield when resuming last month.

The first and third that day have both placed second since while the sixth home Tolpuddle was a winner on the Heath course at Caulfield April 17.

The son of Mastercraftsman ticks plenty of boxes here with the trip, ground and inside alley all in his favour and he looks up to registering his first win since switching hemispheres.

Cranbourne Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 2 Artistic Genius

Trained by Ben, Will & JD Hayes the gelding made the perfect start to his career when debuting with a win over 1300m on a wet track here in August.

The pick had just one more start that prep and resumed with a good fourth, beaten two-and-a-half-lengths in a 1200m Benchmark 64 handicap at Pakenham two months ago.

The drop to this distance appeared to suit with the pick putting daylight between himself and his five rivals in winning by over two lengths at Ballarat next time.

The selection contested a similar race to this when tracking the pace before easily defeating an odds-on favourite that day.

The step up to metro level racing proved too much when crossing the border to race at Morphettville Parks subsequently however.

The return to this level and track are both positives here and connections decision to scratch from a race at Warrnambool on Tuesday to head here can pay dividends.

Ladbrokes Communities BM70 Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Cranbourne Value Bet - Race 8 No. 4 Sojustkoby

The son of Kobayashi showed good form last season winning three of his four race starts.

The sole exception came when racing on a heavy track when contesting the 1200m Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes on his second start.

The pick had won on debut prior to that effort and resumed with a victory over 1000m when contesting a Benchmark 58 handicap on a good 4 track at Bendigo.

The four-year-old went on to register a half-length triumph when contesting a 1200m Benchmark 64 handicap at Avoca subsequently.

However, the selection has been off the track with a tendon injury for over a year since that Avoca win in March last year.

The gelding has advertised his well-being with three efforts in jump-outs in recent months and he looks value to salute switched to a soft 5 track racing first up.
