Coonamble Tips March 14
WOODHAMS FUEL AND QUBE AGRI BENCHMARK 58 SHOWCASE HANDICAP Tips (Race 6)
Coonamble Value Bet - Race 6 No. 4 Covert Miss
This ex-Victorian mare caught the eye in her 1000m debut for the Kieren Hazleton yard and now stepping up in trip along with coming in down in grade a little, she is quite a big each-way price.
Comfortably winning a trial in readiness for that return, Covert Miss was eased back early from a wide draw and although out-sprinted by the eventual winner late, was only two lengths away on the line and having won two of three second-up attempts, she can certainly improve on Sunday.
While this mare could be a little inconsistent in over her prior campaigns, Victorian 58-64 form is certainly good enough for a race of this nature and as runner with tactical versatility, it gives jockey Anthony Cavallo options early from barrier seven.
SWANNY FOODS AND EVERGREEN GROUP BENCHMARK 58 SHOWCASE HANDICAP Tips (Race 7)
Coonamble Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Dusky Damsel
The main negative is the 60kg, but there isn't a great deal of spread in the weights over her key rivals (carrying the same impost as a 56-rater) and her first two performances this campaign, she is projecting for a peak performance now stepping up to 1400m.
A mare that generally gets stronger deeper into her preparations, Dusky Damsel has looked a much more forward galloper this time in where she was only a few strides off winning a harder race first-up and drawing out last start, she goes very close to winning that March 5 attempt if they had a better gate.
Barrier five is perfect for this five-year-old, an alley that allows jockey Jake Pracey-Holmes to settle much closer from early over this extra furlong and with a better run near the speed, she can convert that recent form into a victory here.
WRA COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS QUALIFIER (Race 8)
Coonamble Feature Tip - Race 8 No. 2 Patrick May
Even with the 59kg, the short favourite for Sunday's $150,000 Country Qualifier in Jailbreak is clearly the class runner of the field, but hasn't run out a strong 1400m to date, a factor that won't be an issue for this gelding who is on track for a peak run.
Patrick May took two starts to hit his straps both third and fourth-up last campaign, with comfortable victories over 1300m and then 1400m, the last of those with 60kg, so should the popular elect be wanting late, this four-year-old can stay in for the fight on-speed.
Only narrowly reeled in late fresh, but still fighting late after doing all of the donkey work by dragging the field up to a tearaway leader, he again was working throughout his second-up effort and stuck on very bravely for third against the pattern, so he has a perfect base to run a personal best here.
