Caulfield Tips November 30
Race 1 - 12:20PM Whispering Angel Handicap Tips (1800m)
Best: 5. Saban. The jury is out a little now after his second and third-up performances, although Saban is the most talented horse in this race and he pulled up lame after his latest effort.
Following a slashing return victory when coming from off the speed and letting down strongly in a slowly run race, he was a touch flat second-up when stepping up to 1700m at Caulfield.
The four-year-old still has plenty of upside, as he's only set for start 10 overall in just his second campaign and with excuses from the last run, he could easily bounce back in a race of this strength.
Value: 11. Easy Dun. Connections could have found something easier for this gelding, who could've easily stayed in a country/provincial BM64 with a low rating.
He does look suited up in trip on Saturday, however, and while he appeared a little one-paced last time out with 61kg, Easy Dun still recorded the fastest closing splits of that November 17 event.
He's still learning the caper and with 5kg less over a more suitable trip, he has enough scope to measure up, with the son of Dundeel showing Stakes class potential in his first prep.
Race 2 - 12:50PM Henley Homes Merson Cooper Stakes Tips (1000m)
Best: 5. Usain Boss. Usain Boss impressed at the jump-outs and given the Neasham & Archibald yard don't show them up often, that's adds more merit to those Pakenham hit-outs.
He showed Improvement from his first to his second showing with a strong on-speed via an 800m heat and the colt looks a jump-and-run juvenile who can perform early.
The betting is likely to be your best guide in what's a raffle and the Merson Cooper is often one of the stronger pre-Xmas juvenile races, so it's worth keeping an eye on the form from this.
Value: 6. Imzada. Her half-brother (Irukandji) was a Group winning two-year-old who failed in in this race back in 2017 and Imzada appears forward enough for this first tilt.
She's been a smooth moving filly from what we've seen at the trials and she's another who improved in her second public appearance via a soft heat win at Flemington on November 15.
Imzada tracked the speed in that latest hit-out and with barrier one at Patrick Moloney's disposal for Saturday's debut, she should be able to get an economical run here.
Race 3 - 1:25PM Vale Elvstroem Tips (2400m)
Best: 12. Alma Rise. This Moody & Coleman-trained galloper can keep working through the grades, with Alma Rise searching for a hat-trick in this fourth-up appearance over 2400m.
She's improved following a solid return effort behind a smart Kingswood, with the four-year-old sustaining a wide run to defeat a fitter rival at Moe before handling the rise in grade with ease at Flemington.
While she didn't beat much in her last triumph, Alma Rise made light work of that lot and should've won by further, while she's well into this BM84 being only half a kilo over the minimum.
Value: 6. Mathew. He can mix his form, but Mathew does have some ability and now up to 2400m with three runs under his belt, he shouldn't be far away here.
After a third in the Kyneton Cup on November 6, he didn't enjoy many favours last Saturday at Cranbourne, but he recovered fairly well late for a fifth-of-thirteen finish.
Four of his five wins have come on rain affected ground, so the forecast for Saturday suits the son of Tavistock and he's down in the weights again after the 3kg claim from Tom Prebble.
Race 4 - 2:00PM Sportsbet Twilight Glow Stakes Tips (1400m)
Best: 6. Gellhorn. It's a tricky race, with market elects coming out of a Group 3 here fortnight ago and those contenders were a little bit flattered given their runs off a hot speed.
Gellhorn is big odds here as a maiden, although the Mick Kent-trained filly has shown potential and she finished midfield in the Showdown at Caulfield before a spell.
Her Geelong return effort and lead-up work ahead of that November 17 event suggested that she was looking for a little more ground and she gets that extra journey on Saturday.
Value: 3. Phenom. Nothing stands out with the fresh kill at Port Macquarie, where Phenom made all the running in a country maiden on what was a leader biased track.
That may have been the confidence booster she needed, with the Waterhouse & Bott-trained youngster making it back-to-back wins when taking out a Wyong Class 1 second-up.
When contesting a Metro BM72 at Canterbury last start, the daughter of Zoustar was badly held-up at key stages and she's back against her own age for this Listed fillies event.
Race 5 - 2:35PM Premier Signs Doveton Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 3. Fancify. On talent, I Am Unstoppable and Gaza Blanca have Fancify covered, but it's hard to be confident on those Ciaron Maher-trained horses going off recent form.
The South Australian visitor is searching for a hat-trick to open up her spring campaign and she interestingly she drops back to 1200m after saluting over 1400m at Flemington.
In regards to distance, Fancify is versatile and she also appears capable on most surfaces (has won on a Soft 7 track), while she'll make her own luck up on the speed.
Value: 7. British Columbia. He's double figure odds given the lack of first-up form and that price can also be put down to British Columbia being more proven over longer distances.
Being a strong 1400m-1600m horse could hold him in good stead if this turns into a testing six furlongs on wet ground and his career peak was recorded via his only try on a heavy track.
His lead-up work has been quite good, with the six-year-old quiet via his first Cranbourne jump-out before doing his best work in a 1000m jump-out on November 11.
Race 6 - 3:10PM Sportsbet Sandown Guineas Tips (1600m)
Best: 2. Pisces. He was only first-up when runner-up to Bittercreek in the Red Anchor Stakes at Moonee Valley and Pisces now meets that key rival fitter here third-up.
The Godolphin galloper impressed over the Caulfield 1400m second-up in the Blue Sapphire Stakes, where he came from off the speed in a small field to record a 2.5-length victory.
The Sandown Guineas can throw up a handy feel, but there isn't much depth to the 2024 edition and with more improvement to come over 1600m, Pisces is clearly the one to beat.
Value: 7. Somewhere. The first foal from a useful Crimson Tears is Somewhere and being by Puissance De Lune, he should continue to improve as the distances increase.
It was hard not to be impressed with the debut victory at Ballarat, where he settled back in a field of nine and got stronger as that race wore on to eventually get over the top.
This is clearly harder against better credential opposition, but there's no superstars here and Somewhere could progress off the impressive first start.
Race 7 - 3:45PM Lamaro’s Hotel Eclipse Stakes Tips (1800m)
Best: 12. Poison Chalice. After recording a stylish return victory at Caulfield, Poison Chalice arguably should have won a messy edition of the Group 2 Crystal Mile at Mooney Valley.
With the gelding drop to handicap level third-up at Flemington, he looked just about a good thing in the Chester Manifold third-up and despite losing as fav, that last effort was still a pass mark.
Perhaps he was looking for more ground when staying at 1600m in that last assignment and he gets that this time around at 1800m, so the Savabeel gets his chance to atone.
Value: 5. Charterhouse. He'll come further into calculations should the rain arrive, with this Ciaron Maher-trained galloper more effective on soft ground.
This set-up looks favourable, as he just didn't seem to quite get a strong 2000m here last start. although he was giving 6kg to a winner who had a nice turn-of-foot.
That Country Cup appearance was his second run back since a freshen-up, with the prior Sydney form also standing up for the seven-year-old and he's found his right race here.
Race 8 - 4:25PM Quayclean Zipping Classic Tips (2400m)
Best: 3. Arapaho. The clock backed up the second-up Craven Plate effort over 1800m, with the son of Lope de Vega running the fastest last 800m, 600m, 400m and 200m of that Group 3.
While Arapaho wouldn't have troubled Via Sistina and Atishu in the Champions Stakes, he could've run third there had he drawn kinder, with the gelding making inroads out wide.
That 2000m Flemington performance should top him off nicely for the Zipping Classic and with improvement to come fourth-up, he could easily be peaking on Saturday.
Arapaho took out the Group 1 Tancred Stakes in autumn when fourth-up over this trip and along with being suited under WFA conditions of this race, getting onto rain affected ground won't worry him.
Next Best: 6. Berkeley Square. This does look an afterthought, however, Berkeley Square has been in good touch all campaign and he hasn't much luck after recording back-to-back wins in September.
He again covered ground via his last outing in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington and given the torrid run that he had in that 2600m Group 3, the gelding wasn't disgraced.
While he's been competitive of late on firmer ground, Berkeley Square is far more effective on wet tracks and that was evident second-up when saluting in style despite a wide run.
The five-year-old could win a really nice race if he strikes testing ground and while being deep into the campaign remains a query here, he'll likely get underfoot conditions to suit.
Value: 15. Little Mix. She might not be the best suited under WFA conditions, but this Neasham & Archibald-trained mare is very honest and she has upside in contesting this feature fourth-up.
The six-year-old caught the eye via an unlucky second-up performance at The Valley before coming from the rear to record a fourth-of-fifteen finish in the Matriarch Stakes.
Little Mix ran the fastest last 600m of that mares Group 2 and while she's effective on most surfaces, the daughter of Mahisara is arguably at her best when racing on wet ground.
A wide barrier will likely force her back early under Blake Shinn, but Caulfield can favour the middle and wider lanes late on a program if it is rain affected, as the inside tends to chop out.
Race 9 - 5:00PM Manhari Kevin Heffernan Stakes Tips (1400m)
Best: 1. Tuvalu. The son of Kermadec has had his fair share of problems, but ability hasn't been one of those issues and Tuvalu is an obvious selection off his brilliant fresh effort.
The November 16 program favored swoopers, albeit the seven-year-old had nothing taking him into the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes from the rear and he would've been right in the finish with a few more favours.
He hasn't been out of the money in eight tries on rain affected tracks and with a second-up record that also reads well, he's going to be hard to beat in this WFA contest.
Value: 5. Welwal. On debut for the Price & Kent Jnr yard is Welwal, with the French Group 3 winner having shown some promise for Chris Waller and all three career wins have come on soft tracks.
His only Australian victory was recorded first-up last campaign on a Soft 6 surface and that Rosehill success was recorded over the same distance that he resumes over on Saturday.
The bookies are taking him on off some workmanlike jump-outs for the new yard, but he improved in the latest of those showings and a fast-run 1400m will suit.
Race 10 - 5:40PM Tile Importer Summoned Stakes Tips (1600m)
Best: 1. Serasana. Aiming to break a 12-month drought that dates back to this program last year is Serasana, who brought up that Sandown Guineas triumph over this track/trip on a Soft 7 surface.
She wasn't able to progress over the autumn after a good but unlucky return at Caulfield and now third-up over a more suitable distance, the daughter of Schnitzel looks set to peak.
The four-year-old was outside the leader and exposed on the November 16 card, where she was okay vs the pattern of the day and there's improvement to come.
Value: 17. Stylish. She showed versatility when taking out a Bendigo Class 1 on return, with Stylish coming from the rear of the field to salute first-up.
The four-year-old was mainly an on-speed operator over her two prpes, with the only previous win coming second-up on soft ground and she was in much stronger company after the Pakenham success.
We've got a good gauge on most of these, as a lot of them are quite well exposed and while this is much harder, Stylish is one of the few in this field with some upside.
