Caulfield Tips June 1
Race 1 - 11:50AM Dexion Victoria Handicap Tips (1100m)
Best: 3. Interest Point. The son of Blue Point looks a pretty straightforward galloper, a colt who arrives off an all-the-way win at Mornington on May 13.
That two-year-old event rated well for the program, having gone faster than the older horses on the day and that maiden has produced another winner.
He'll put himself on speed and given he was half a stride slow in that debut appearance, gate seven suits, as he can cross without being hunted up.
Value: 5. Castellar. You can never be quite sure with this stable, as Robbie Laing horses tend to improve when deep into a campaign with race fitness.
That said, Castellar has looked sharp in all public outings, which included a May 27 jump out of Cranbourne over 650m and he's shown tactical speed.
Soul Lady (half-sister) is a handy sprinter on the country NSW circuit, so he should be able to go early enough in a race that lacks a standout.
Race 2 - 12:25PM Next Payments Handicap Tips (1600m)
Best: 2. Subrising. The Nigel Blackiston yard isn't necessarily the easiest one to catch, although his runners tend to furnish later in their campaigns.
While she's coming out of a BM64 Ballarat, Subrising could simply be the one in form at the right time versus some key rivals who are coming off poor runs.
She showed a turn-of-foot off a slow speed last time, so a small field may play into her hands and there's handy form around her early three-year-old prep.
Value: 5. My Xanadu. She's superbly bred, being by Fastnet Rock and out of Lights Of Heaven, and the filly saluted on debut despite doing a bit wrong.
Although she was well beaten after that, My Xanadu was stepping straight to 1600m and in a race that suited the swoopers, she was against the pattern.
From barrier three in a field with less pressure, Linda Meech may be able to dictate this time and with more favours, she can easily improve at start three.
Race 3 - 1:00PM Vale Rod McQueen Tips (1400m)
Best: 2. Episodic. She doesn't look well weighted coming up to 60kg off some low rating Adelaide affairs, although this isn't much of a race.
The South Australian visitor also finds couldn't be going any better at present, while Damian Lane engagement for this fourth-up tilt is also a big positive.
She's putting it all together, with a hat-trick to open the campaign and you don't see many come from so far back to win that easily on the Morphettville Parks circuit.
Arqana handled the rise to metro company well in her latest performance here and she's down in grade here in dropping from a BM78 to a BM70.
She recorded the fastest last 400m of the entire meeting on May 11 and with even luck, she only needs to hold that form to be in the finish.
Race 4 - 1:35PM Beretta's Langwarrin Hotel Handicap Tips (1100m)
Best: 7. Glitzing. It's a competitive race and a reasonably strong one for off season BM78 standards, especially given it's restricted (fillies and mares).
A contender at long odds is Glitzing, who has completed two jump-outs leading into Saturday's return and she wasn't knocked about in the last of those.
She didn't quite come up in a short December prep, but that came up quick off a long first campaign and there's good form her early spring outings.
Value: 2. Alvarinho. This Tasmanian visitor recorded back-to-back wins over this trip before contesting a pair of Group 3's over her local carnival.
She acquitted herself well, having split Yellow Sam and Megamea before rising in trip at Launceston and recording another black-type placing.
Well she has a 1400m win to her name, Alvarinho is more effective over shorter trips and with a kind map for this fresh assignment, she has to be in the mix.
Race 5 - 2:10PM GMH Fire & Safety Australia Handicap Tips (1200m)
Best: 8. Bellinger. There wouldn't be too many horses going around in Australia more deserving of a win than Bellinger, who keeps knocking on the door.
While the winning drought stretches back to March 11 in Adelaide last year, he did put a space on a pretty smart one in Chicago Storm there.
He's going up too well this time in to not be pinching one soon and while he's perhaps looking for a little more ground, a firmer track will suit here.
Value: 6. Why Worry. An interesting galloper is this ex-Hong Kong sprinter, who won three from 10 starts when prepared by Douglas Whyte.
Why Worry was sold there off a massive trial win in South Australia back in 2022 and he was sharp when winning his first hit-out for the Liam Howley yard on March 20.
There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of speed in this contest, so he could be the main influence up front and a market push wouldn't surprise as a result.
Race 6 - 2:45PM Manhari Metals Handicap Tips (1100m)
Best: 6. Keep Reading. You always have to respect Richard & Chantelle jolly when they cross the border and they've won with their last two Melbourne starters.
They're aiming for a hat-trick of Victorian wins with Keep Reading, who recorded his first ever return triumph on May 18 and he won't know himself with 54kg.
He has some very encouraging form from his last two outings in spring, where he finished second to Queman (Oakleigh Plate winner) each time.
He never fired for Chris Waller and on return to Will Clarken, the five-year-old took out the Group 3 John Hawkes Stakes leading into The Goodwood.
For whatever reason, he's just never been able to run out a strong 1200m and he was also flat in that second-up run, however, he's bounced back previously.
Race 7 - 3:20PM Ern Jensen Funerals Mile Tips (1600m)
Best: 7. St Lawrence. Ciaron Maher placed this gelding superbly early in his Australian career and he worked through the grades quickly as a result.
Although he didn't go on with it over a short spring prep, St Lawrence looks back on track off a return third in a fast-run Rosehill race and that form is decent.
Iknowastar won well last week and Waterford was unlucky at Scone, while it's worth noting that all wins have come when anti-clockwise and he's unbeaten at Caulfield.
Value: 4. First Accused. He was no match for a brilliant Shock 'Em Ova via the May 11 meeting here, although he beat the rest in that fresh run.
Also, First Accused was giving 3.5kg to that progressive winner and Shock 'Em Ova heads the betting for the Lord Mayor's Cup at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
If there's intent early, then he may well be able to cross and lead under Codi Jordan, while his strong second-up stats are another positive factor.
Race 8 - 4:00PM Thoroughbred Club of Australia Handicap Tips (1200m)
Best: 11. Lovely Lookin'. These Adelaide horses are often well placed in the Melbourne off-season after their local carnival and this looks another case of that.
Well she was competitive in three outings following a return win, Lovely Lookin' was at her best last start in the Proyd Miss, where she was luckless.
From a good draw, there's an opportunity to take up a more prominent stalking role behind a strong speed and then be produced late on the 54kg minimum.
Value: 3. Heuristic. The chasing return in a fast-run 1000m on the Kensington circuit with 61kg perhaps left Heuristic a little bit flat second-up at Newcastle.
The Godolphin galloper is still building back off a lengthy absence and if combining that with a testing surface, then he wasn't disgraced last start.
He's got a platform to really spike third-up now with a few runs under the belt and that was the case last year when he found form deeper into the prep.
Race 9 - 4:35PM Logical Staffing Solutions Handicap Tips (2000m)
Best: 15. Mirzann. The son of Camelot is ready to furnish and pick a few races off, as he's stepping up to more suitable distances now that he has a fitness platform.
An import who won over 2400m and 3000m in Europe, Mirzann caught the eye on Australian debut here over 1700m, albeit he was a touch flattered there.
There was more merit to the last run at Flemington, where Damian Lane was blocked form moving when he wanted to and that effort should top him off for this.
After being held-up from the 400m to the 200m, the six-year-old was as strong through the line as any of his rivals and he's looking for 2000m off that.
He doesn't have the upside of the market elect, however, Flossing also hasn't done much wrong over the last 12 months and he goes in off that last effort.
