Caulfield Tips February 24
Race 1 - 12:15PM Vale Verry Elleegant Tips (2000m)
Best: 1. Dunkel. Despite looking the good thing of the Mooney Valley program on December 30 when second-up, Dunkel drifted out to a generous price in that last run.
Last year's SA Derby winner proved too classy in that BM100 and he's a galloper who is often presented successfully fresh, so the gap between runs is no concern here.
He's reportedly been aimed at an Adelaide Cup, while from a middle draw here and with a turn-of-foot to overcome a potential slow tempo, Dunkel is clearly the one to beat.
The veteran is ticking over well, having backed up a decent return over a mile with a fourth over this track/trip last start and he drops 2.5kg off that run.
While a victory here at long odds would be somewhat of a surprise, he does have a very good record at Caulfield and he's a must if playing wider in exotics.
Race 2 - 12:45PM Sportsbet Make It Look Easy Handicap Tips (1100m)
Best: 11. Hanchi. It'll be interesting to see what the market does like with this Perth visitor, a three-year-old who has a terrific turn-of-foot and 1100m fresh will suit.
He brings strong form from the Perth carnival, which includes a first-up second behind Oscar's Fortune and that winner finished off the year with a second in the Group 1 Winterbottom.
As an effective short course sprinter who was last seen on January 1, he shouldn't take long to come to hand, especially with a slick tick-over trial being completed.
Value: 8. Von Hauke. He'll win better races if he can get his head in the game, with bad racing manners having proved costly for Von Hauke on multiple occasions.
Although he was a little disappointing after a return win at Sandown last spring, the son of Savabeel remained competitive and he still has upside.
I'm not convinced that he ran a mile when last seen on Champions Day and it's worth noting that both of his wins have come first-up, so he has to be respected fresh.
Race 3 - 1:20PM Sportsbet Angus Armanasco Stakes Tips (1400m)
Best: 1. Serasana. The daughter of Schnitzel was shown versatility over two campaigns, having recorded a debut romp over 1000m, while her last win came over a mile in the Sandown Guineas.
Serasana did land some decent bets at long odds in that Group 2 feature on December 2 and going straight to seven furlongs off decent lead-up work is a plus first-up.
The three-year old will roll forward under John Allen, who was aboard in that last victory and while it's a tricky race, she makes some appeal at an each-way quote.
Value: 7. Don'tdoubtlayla. It was a very stylish first-up win on the Kensington circuit in January and while she was well held following that, there were excuses second-up.
Don'tdoubtlayla was taken back in that leader-dominated affair on February 3 and now from a low draw over a longer trip, they should be more positive on Saturday.
The form was already being frank from that February 3 race, with the runner up saluting on Wednesday and as a hard-fit filly from a leading yard, she's not hopeless.
Race 4 - 1:55PM Sportsbet Zeditave Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 1. Brave Mead. He's always been a useful galloper, however, Brave Mead went to a new level first-up with an all-the way victory over this track/trip on Australia Day.
The form hasn't been fully tested from that affair, we still have to warrant a victory over the likes of King Colorado and Stephanie, and was the performance of a colt who has furnished.
He won over 1400m in spring, however, three of his four victories have been over 1200m and arriving fresh with a solid jump-out completed, he's well placed to go back-to-back.
Scheelite didn't appear to run a strong 1600m in the Caulfield Guineas and without luck each time, his three lead-up runs going into that all had merit.
Keeping him to the sprinting caper suits, as he does have a nice turn-of-foot when conditions allow, although he's a horse that often needs luck due to his racing pattern.
Race 5 - 2:30PM Stow Storage Autumn Classic Tips (1800m)
Best: 2. Immediacy. This Busuttin & Young trained three-year-old has been good to us, with Immediacy winning both starts and the gelding was each-way odds both times.
1500m was as short as he wanted on debut, where sustained a long run to saluted and he then took care of older rivals via a metro BM64 at start two, and he's back to his own age here.
That's never an easy achievement for a developing three-year-old and the form has stood up nicely, with four subsequent winners produced from that Sandown event.
Value: 11. Time To Chat. You can tie in the Dragoon form through Immediacy and Time To Chat put a bigger margin on that rival when breaking through at Sandown last start.
Blinkers on and the step to 1600m worked in that last tilt, was she settled on the speed and while the filly didn't exactly explode, she maintained her effort.
She completed a good tick-over jump-out since that January 24 run and while she's drawn out here, Time To Chat will likely roll forward early under Michael Dee.
Race 6 - 3:05PM Carlton Draught Peter Young Stakes Tips (1800m)
Best: 10. Foxy Cleopatra. This it's a really tough race, as Gold Trip is the best horse here by some distance, however, he's still hit-or-miss and this is a questionable winning set-up.
With blinkers going on here second-up after recording the best closing splits of the Carlyon Cup on February, there looks to be genuine intent on Saturday with Foxy Cleopatra.
I felt there was an opportunity to position closer in that last outing, so with another low draw and Blake Shinn staying aboard, look for them to be more positive this time around.
Value: 2. Vow And Declare. The veteran produced a cracker a huge odds first-up over this track/trip in spring, where he got home nicely in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes.
1800m is on the short side, however, this contest lacks the depth of the Underwood Stakes and he followed that with a second in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes.
His spring fall away in the Melbourne Cup and Zipping Classic, but he's still proving himself capable at a better level than this and I wouldn't be shocked if he's thereabouts here.
Race 7 - 3:40PM Lamaro's Hotel Futurity Stakes Tips (1400m)
Best: 1. Mr Brightside. He returned with a victory over this track/trip when taking out the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes and he was vulnerable there fresh in a fast-run affair, but class prevailed.
Second-up last spring, he took out the Memsie Stakes under the same conditions and the gelding sat wide there yet still accounted for the likes of I Wish I Win and Alligator Blood.
Not only is this much weaker than what he faced in that Memsie triumph, but there's also no I'm Thunderstruck or Alligator Blood and he split them in last year's Futurity.
Value: 2. Pericles. Visually, it was just a run on return in the CF Orr, however, Pericles was clearly in need of that hit-out, having arrived there off only one trial and the jockey backed that up post-race.
Also, the Godolphin four-year-old was forced to retreat early and chase a long way out from the back half, and he's clearly a galloper who is more comfortable closer to the speed.
Without as many on-pace influences and now with barrier one at his disposal, the son of Street Boss finds a much kinder set-up, where he'll likely be stalking Buffalo River.
Race 8 - 4:15PM Sportsbet Blue Diamond Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 4. Coleman. The form was franked from his impressive debut victory in the Debutant Stakes, with Arabian Summer now a two-time winner, while Aardvark saluted at Listed level last week.
Coleman was even more impressive on return, recording a 2.75 length win in the Chairman's Stakes and the Merson Cooper winner (Eneeza) was well held in second there.
A son of Pierata who is bred to get over a little more ground, the Matt Laurie-trained colt has been able to absorb the tempo in both victories and he does have tactical speed.
Prior that December 16 win, Traffic Warden did run into Storm Boy on debut and while he was not match for him over 1100m, he did put more than four lengths on third.
James Cummings only gave the son of Street Boss one quiet trial leading into his February 3 return at Rosehill, where he did look fresh, but that would've brought him on.
Race 9 - 4:55PM Sportsbet Oakleigh Plate Tips (1100m)
Best: 4. Sghirripa. This gelding one of the more promising sprinters to come out of South Adelaide in recent years and he continues to furnish with racing, having won his last two attempts.
As a galloper who was still doing plenty wrong as he was working through the grades, that last start Group 3 Standish Handicap performance stood out in terms of professionalism.
A wide gate isn't that big of negative one-turn sprint circuit and with Sghirripa having shown his versatility this season, he doesn't need to get into a early speed battle here.
Value: 1. Kallos. Asfoora can improve here second-up, however, with Kallos meeting that mare 1kg better off from a soft one-length win, I'm not sure why he's nearly triple her quote.
The future appeared unclear after a sole spring flop in September, but he was tipped straight out after that return performance and James Cummings has turned him around.
Track pattern will be crucial, as he's likely to be back and look to chime in late under Blake Shinn, although he'll relish a strong tempo, especially if the wider lanes are in play.
Race 10 - 5:35PM Catanach's Jewellers Mannerism Stakes Tips (1400m)
Best: 10. Eternal Flame. At an each-way quote, we had Eternal Flame one of our best bets last Saturday, where the Mick Kent-trained trained four-year-old was a good thing licked.
While a better betting proposition has been passed, as the bookies didn't miss that run, she does face Revolutionary Miss again, who was the winner of that affair.
The market suggests that's the right form reference and with Eternal Flame having sat wide over this track/trip prior when bolting in, she has to be given a chance to atone on the back-up.
Value: 6. Party For One. Going solely off the Bellmaine Stakes here on February 3, Vagrant would easily get the nod over Party For One, however, this is a different set-up.
The daughter of Rubick always takes a run to hit her straps and versus a hard-fit winner who had a better turn-of-foot at 1200m, Vagrant did have a lot more in her favour.
1400m is her pet journey and she generally improves from a return outing, while with another gun draw and under Blake Shinn once again, she should get a gun run.
