Canterbury Favourite - Race 2 No. 5 Bluepinot
There isn't a whole lot there in regards to breeding, but he's a cracking type and 525k was forked out at the 2023 Magic Millions, with that price tag seemingly down his good looks.
Bluepinot was given time after being well held on debut in May and he's building into his second prep well, which started with a slashing Hawkesbury return when in restricted room.
There wasn't separating Bluepinot and Kotaishi last start, but I felt there was more merit to the run of this colt, who is suited to 1550m and he has less convictions than his main threat.
Jamberoo Action Park Sprint Tips (Race 6)
Canterbury Best Bet - Race 6 No. 6 Kerguelen
James Cummings will be hoping that Kerguelen can work through the grades over the off-season, with the Godolpin gelding arriving to this return tilt off two solid spring trials.
With two wins and two seconds from four starts to date, and with the gelding bring short starting prices from all of those prior outings, the market is likely to find him here.
I've got plenty of time for Invader Zim and Kerguelen never gave up via a fighting second to that talented galloper before a spell, while in third was Yorkshire (won his next two starts).
Kia Evening Star Tips (Race 7)
Canterbury Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Union Army
There's still time for the Ryan & Alexiou-trained galloper, with the five-year-old having completed just 15 starts and he's back in grade for Friday's return assignment.
Given he made light work of a stakes class Pereille when bringing up win four back in January, Union Army has been a touch disappointing since then (does he need a dry track?).
The son of Rich Enuff has been given time since a short winter campaign, while he's most effective when ridden with a sit and produced late, which suits the skillset of Jason Collett.
BP Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Canterbury Value Bet - Race 8 No. 7 Field Marshal
His return performance was better than the tenth-of-twelve reads, with Field Marshal getting warm at the end of that Kembla Grange BM64 and his work past the line was strong.
The Joe Pride-trained galloper was a notable drifter in the market ahead of that first-up tilt and the punters also opposed him via his January return, where the gelding was plain.
This is a similar set-up to that short summer prep, with Jason Collett replacing an apprentice rider over a more suitable trip and he bolted in when last produced on this pattern.
