Ballarat Tips for March 9
The Haymarket Maiden Plate Tips (Race 3)
Ballarat Value Bet - Race 3 No. 5 Steel Mist
This first starter has had three jumpouts in readiness for this debut, the latest a strong piece of work where he got well off the speed and hit the line nicely under no riding.
Ballarat looks an ideal track for this galloper where he can build up the revs around the bend and sustain his sprint that he showed in the jumpout.
I like the booking of Dean Holland who is very good with these young horses still learning the trade, let alone being a jockey in-form at the moment.
With a little bit of luck from barrier two, Steel Mist should be somewhere in the finish and looks over the odds in the early markets.

Ballarat Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 6 Newzeel Deal
This progressive staying type from the Alderson yard looks to have come back in good order after running fourth to Ain'tnodeeldun on Melbourne Cup day.
He did enough in his jumpout, looking in need of the hit-out, but coming into this looks very well suited resuming at the 1500m.
Jumping from a wide gate looks a positive as well, although likely to need cover in the run to produce a nice sprint, Newzeel Deal has room to move with a big stride about him.
Three of his four starts were on wet tracks, but arguably his best performance came on good ground in a stakes race, so I am confident that this boy can go through the grades by kicking off in this Maiden.

Ballarat Best Bet - Race 6 No. 6 Harlem Blues
A good thing beat is certainly a way to describe the performance of this horse last start at Sandown when heavily backed late.
Harlem Blues had been trialling well this prep, and such a positive first-up run is a good sign of what this three-year-old can achieve.
Second-up last prep, he was only narrowly defeated in fourth position behind the Stakes-placed Riding The Wave, so he can improve here.
Damian Lane takes the mount from barrier eight, so expect to see him get a little further back in the run, but this time launch down the outside rather than try and find a split through the pack.
