Balaklava Roughie - Race 3 No. 12 Unwind
The New Zealand-bred made three starts for Ciaron Maher prior to being purchased by current trainer Kristi Evans for $7,000 at the sales in March.
The first two of those efforts came on Ballarat’s synthetic track including when delivering a respectable fifth place finish over 1500m when debuting last July.
The daughter of Raise The Flag was beaten just under five-and-a-half-lengths that day and she was spelled following a seventh upped to 2100m there the following month.
While the four-year-old failed to make an impact when seventh of ten over 1523m on her turf debut it’s notable that she was slowly away at Moonee Valley that day.
The second and fifth have both won in the interim period and the pick should find provincial racing easier having raced at metro-level that day.
The selection also drops back in distance here and jumping from an inside alley may prove up to surprising on her first start since the end of January.

Balaklava Best Bet - Race 4 No. 1 Flambard
The Inference gelding showed good form last prep including when registering a track and trip win in a Benchmark 56 handicap held on a sound surface in November.
Two good third place finishes followed including when beaten just over a length when contesting a Class 2 handicap on the Parks track at Morphettville ten days later.
The grey was spelled following a two-and-a-half-length defeat on his first attempt at 1700m at Gawler subsequently and he dropped back to 1400m for his return this prep.
That return saw the pick race from the front having been caught wide and without cover in the early stages and he performed well prior to fading into third late on at this track.
Byron Cozamanis’ representative is a fairly versatile type with regard to tactics and should have no issues jumping from barrier nine here.
Jason Holder’s mount looks ready for a return to this distance and is taken to deliver the third win of his career.
Mybutcher Benchmark 56 Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Balaklava Value Bet - Race 5 No. 11 Prance ‘N’ Dance
The five-year-old won just once in 2024 with that victory coming by just under half-a-length over 1012m at Mildura in August.
The pick raced on a good 4 track with her best subsequent effort that year coming when third in an 1100m Benchmark 56 handicap at Clare at the start of last month.
The mare was spelled following a mid-division finish in a twelve-runner Benchmark 0-56 handicap at Oakbank in January.
The selection acquitted herself well in finishing just over three lengths seventh in a similar contest held over 1050m when resuming at the same venue earlier this month.
The daughter of Sir Prancealot is expected to have improved for that comeback effort and is set to jump from next to the rail in this contest.
John Croucher’s mare gets in off a nice racing weight here with Lachlan Neindorf up for the second time having partnered the pick at Oakbank in January.

Balaklava Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Spirit Of Flight
Formerly trained by Clinton McDonald the filly made the perfect start for current handler Stephen Theodore when winning first up at Oakbank a month ago.
Racing in fifth for much of the contest the filly came home nearly a length clear of her nearest rival when contesting a 1050m maiden that day.
The pick raced on a soft 6 surface on that occasion and went on to deliver a good half-length third in a Benchmark 60 handicap at Murray Bridge nine days later.
The daughter of Spirit Of Boom stepped up to 1400m for that Murray Bridge event with a double figure barrier against her when disappointing back at Murray Bridge last time.
That latest effort also saw the four-year-old race over 1600m for the first time and she should appreciate the drop back in distance.
Stacey Metcalfe, on board for all three of the selection’s starts for her current stable is again set to ride and the pair look up to claiming the finale jumping from barrier two.
