Check out our full in depth preview below:
Whereas the Calaway Girl boasts six last start winners, the colts and geldings edition only features two race winners thus far. Although the field has been decimated by key scratchings early, Stephen Jones trained colt Baby Wong is the current favourite for the race at $3.60.
After a brave loss at Newcastle over 900m, the two-year-old colt by Press Statement narrowly went down to Chris Waller’s talented colt Conexy at his second start. Settling outside the leader and eventual winner, Baby Wong finished less than half-a-length of Conexy but gapped the rest with over eight-lengths back to third.
Gold Coast father and son team Trent and Toby Edmonds boast the second favourite for the race in Alpine Edge, an unraced colt by Better Than Ready. An extremely promising type who has trialled well on two occasions over 1000m, his latest effort was his most impressive, holding off a major rival in this race in Golden Eighty.
A chestnut colt by No Nay Never, Ben Thompson was aboard the Bryan and Daniel Guy trained galloper when he broke his maiden in impressive fashion at Doomben. Magic Millions Clockwise Classic placegetter Rambeau and Peter and Paul Snowden trained Cochrane are the only other horses in single figures.
Listed Phelan Ready Stakes Best Value - Golden Eighty
Although there has been plenty made of the interstate raiders for this race, there is no horse with the runs on the board like Golden Eighty. In races dominated by leaders who find the rail, it is rare to see two-year-olds win off the pace, let along weave their way through the find and take gaps like he did on debut. After breaking his maiden on debut in October, Golden Eighty was immediately put out for a break and resumed with a strong trial over 1000m alongside Alpine Edge, and although the interstate raiders are heavily fancied, he is the horse with the runs on the board.
Listed Phelan Ready Stakes Best Bet - Alpine Edge
Drawing the fence is absolutely vital in juvenile racing and it will be essential for Alpine Edge on debut in such a strong race. The colt by Better Than Ready was a trial star over his home track on the Gold Coast before replicating that run once again at Doomben. Finding the lead under Robbie Fradd who climbs aboard on Saturday, he found the lead and kicked clear for a strong win beating of key rival Golden Eighty in the process.
There looks to be strong speed in the race with Rambeau, Prime Asset and Baby Wong all possessing early speed, while Cochrane and Alpine Edge have led in trials. Whether or not the colts look up to the standard of the fillies in the Calaway Girl will be an interesting dissection for following the race, however, on first look the fillies look to have the points on the board.
Although the current crop of raced horses have looked strong, there looks to be room for an up and coming colt or gelding to stamp their case as a Magic Millions fancy and Alpine Edge falls into this case. Showing extremely strong speed in his trials, expect Robbie Fradd to take the lead aboard the Better Than Ready colt and prove extremely hard to beat.
Alpine Edge brings some exciting trial form to the race and gains the services of Robbie Fradd from barrier one. Fellow Gold Coast colt Golden Eighty trialled alongside Alpine Edge and looks hard to beat
