Kensington Blackbook Runners - Wednesday, January 1

Eight races were run on the Kensington circuit at Royal Randwick on New Year's Day and it was a reasonable card for punters with well supported runners in To Your Health, Killer Instinct, Twentyfour Carat and Dalmatia Prince saluting over the program.

The John O'Shea stable is in good touch and he was able to take out the first three legs of the quaddie with Killer Instinct, Private Thoughts and Twentyfour Carar all prevailing.

We've highlighted three runners below to follow from the meeting.

Kensington Race 5 - Killer Instinct

A likeable mare from the John O'Shea yard that is putting together a nice record where she made it four wins from ten career starts via this Benchmark 70.

After doing enough first-up at Newcastle, she did have excuses from well back here on December 18 where she was about the only one making an impression from off the speed.

Was searching for this 1800m journey third-up and whilst admittedly having the favours under a good steer from Billy Owen, it was effectively put to bed as soon as the gap presented.

With a rating of only 75, she can still work through grades for now and looks to have the ability to run out a strong ten furlongs which her breeding supports.

Likely Target: Either the Benchmark 78 at Randwick on January 11 (1800m) or the Benchmark 78 at Rosehill on January 18 (2000m) look sound options.

Kensington Race 6 - Satin Rain

This resuming filly caught the eye late with a big run from the back.

The clock did back-up that effort with a 32.77 last 600m along with a decent last furlong for this three-year-old by the 2015 Australian Guineas winner Wandjina and out of a half sister to a group one winner in Great Shot.

As that breeding and her race record to date suggests, she'll come into her own over a mile, the trip she won her maiden over last time but could be forward enough to figure a little more at six furlongs next start.

With a low rating and just the one race win in that first racing campaign, Satin Rain does have plenty of upside going forward.

Likely Target: Has many options and can go back to a Provincial Class 1 if they're looking for a kill.

Kensington Race 8 - Toulouse

It was a brave effort from this David Payne-trained gelding resuming here.

After being three-wide for the journey, he ultimately just found himself giving a perfect tow into the race for the eventual winner Dalmatia Prince who went past him at the 300m.

When looking as though he'd be safely held following this, the effort to fight and hold on for fourth was admirable under the circumstances where he was entitled to finish further back.

The overall winning strike rate for this gelding is the concern but with a very low rating of 58, he can be placed a lot softer than Benchmark 70 level in town and this certainly wasn't a bad effort.

Likely Target: Is eligible for Class 2/Benchmark 64 grade if they go to the Provincials.
