Horses For The Blackbook From Victoria Derby Day 2019

An action-packed day at Flemington saw New Zealand queen Melody Belle take out her tenth Group One race and make a statement for this week's Mackinnon Stakes.

Warning was super, outstaying the field in the Derby with Flemington on his mind this time next year.

Fierce Impact was too strong on the Cantala while Exceedance has now made himself a $1 million colt taking out the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

We have found three runners from this program that you should follow next start or campaign.

Flemington Race 8 - Cascadian

This galloper with a big, white face caught the eye, finding some trouble around the bend in the Cantala yet came home with the fastest sectionals of the race from the 1200m to the final 200m.

He broke 36 seconds for his last 600m showing he has made up a lot of ground in that time and he was travelling at a high pace.

What I like about this horses run was that when he hits top gear, he can maintain that.

With a bit more race experience in Group One conditions under his belt, a race such as the Doncaster next prep will be on his radar and he looks the perfect up and coming horse for that.

Likely Target: Doncaster Handicap

Flemington Race 4 - Carif

The stayer from the Snowden yard was just one and a half lengths away from taking his spot on the first Tuesday in November.

Although his form does look second grade to the better stayers we will be seeing in the Melbourne Cup, what I am taking from this performance is that he was still green and is by So You Think, so he will be hitting his straps come the Autumn as a late four-year-old.

He had the fastest last 400m-200m and 200m-finish as well as the fastest last 800m, 600m and 400m of the race, looking like he would eat up a longer trip.

I would not be surprised to see this boy run in a Sandown Cup over 3200m or be sent for a spell for a crack at the Sydney Cup next preparation.

Likely Target: Sandown Cup and/or Sydney Cup

Flemington Race 3 - Kavalmo

Hie was okay back in the field.

Dalasan and Brandenburg dropped him on the turn but these two colt are high class.

As he was coming into the race, Groundswell gave him a big bump and he looked to only be flailing at that point.

Horses can lose a lot of confidence when they are dropped by runners around them and cop big knocks, but what I liked was his last 400m sectional.

He ran 13.35 and although that is not fast by any means, he was in testing conditions and only lost around three quarters of a length on Groundswell down the straight.

If he were to run in a Sandown Guineas, he could improve coming into that race, with most of these runners peaking for this race and with it being their grand final.

This is the only race I want to be following him into as it will not be of Carbine class.

Likely Target: Sandown Guineas
