Worth $200,000, this sprint is both a key carnival ead-up and a strong event in itself, with Group One winners having won three of the last four editions.

Godolphin have triumphed in two of the last three runnings of the Expressway Stakes and are in the box-seat for another, with Anamoe the $1.70 favourite via bookmaker.com.au

2022 Expressway Stakes Tips

2022 Expressway Stakes Best Bet - Anamoe

He is Australia's premier three-year-old and a versatile colt, having won at stakes level from 1000m to 1600m and with any luck, his already impressive record would read a lot better.

With a kinder draw, he could've won the Golden Slipper, while it took an on-pace bias to deny him narrowly in the Golden Rose before his Caulfield Guineas redemption.

Anamoe rounded out his spring in interesting fashion, going down in a Cox Plate clash with State Of Rest, a result that surprisingly was not overturned in the steward's room.

We know 1200m isn't his pet trip, although he saluted in The Run To The Rose last spring off a setback and without those queries this prep, he should be accounting for this field.

2022 Expressway Stakes Value Bet - Standout

Looking to break a two-year winning drought is this five-year-old, who was a brilliant first-up winner of the Expressway Stakes in 2020, when held at Randwick.

Although Kolding and Alizee aren't sprinters, Standout still put a few multiple Group One winners away that day, runners that much like Anamoe, had further autumn goals.

The entire proved mostly disappointing following that, but there was a string of encouraging performances last spring, mostly behind the Australia's elite sprinters.

His lead-up trial behind Nature Strip was a little stronger than his work last prep and as an out-and-out sprinter over 1200m, I think he's the only threat to the favourite.

Verdict

Anamoe is the obvious for the 2022 Expressway Stakes and could well start shorter than $1.70 given the lack of quality rivals.

On his preferred dry surface and as the best designated sprinter, 2020 Expressway winner Standout looks the only threat to the fav.
