The Group 2 Wakeful Stakes has always been the main Melbourne lead-up race for the VRC Oaks, with 35 fillies having completed the Wakeful Stakes-VRC Oaks winning double and many other Oaks winners have also been produced from that 2000m Derby Day event.

Treasurethe moment ($2.90) recorded a hat-trick when successful in the Wakeful Stakes and it was a comfortable victory for the Matt Laurie-trained galloper, who heads the 2024 VRC Oaks market with EliteBet
This consistent three-year-old hasn't finished outside the first two in six career starts and Damien Lane has this Group 1 engagement, with the gun hoop searching for a second VRC Oaks win.
Powers Of Opal ($3.70) was a heavily backed odds-on fav in the Wakeful Stakes and considering that market support, she was a touch disappointing after travelling like the winner a long way out.
The VRC Oaks looks a clear target race, however, while champion jockey James McDonald stays aboard for this 2500m feature.
Harlem Queen ($7) brings different form lines, with the Nathan Doyle-trained filly back against her own sex here after a fourth-place finish in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes.
She was Group 1 placed prior to that when second in the Flight Stakes and the daughter of Brutal opened her spring account with back-to-back victories.

VRC Oaks Winners
The VRC Oaks was first run in 1861 when Palestine was victorious. It has since been won by many of Australia’s most promising fillies including Jameka, Mosheen, Miss Finland and Samantha Miss – all of which have gone on to claim G1 features from then on.
Worth $1 million, the VRC Oaks headlines the traditional Ladies Day card on Thursday, which is the third day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
This 2500m feature was given Group 1 status in 1979 and the current sponsorship is provided by Kennedy, so the race is currently called the Kennedy Oaks, but the fans know this race as ‘The Oaks’.
Willowy (2021), She's Extreme (2022) and Zardozi (2023) have won the last three editions of the VRC Oaks.
