Otherwise known as "The Metrop" is this 2400m Handicap, which not only provides the winner an entry into the following autumn's Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but it also gives the perfect springboard into the Melbourne Spring Carnival for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
In a competitive market with Picklebet, Unusual Legacy is a $5.75 favourite to win The Metropolitan.
2024 The Metropolitan Tips
2024 The Metropolitan Best Bet - Unusual Legacy
I've been very keen on his chances for The Metropolitan for a while now and although he's still the third emergency, it looks as though Unusual Legacy will gain a start.
The lightly raced five-year-old is one of Chris Waller's more promising stayers and now out to 2400m for the first time, he could explode here with just 50kg on his back.
He appeared to be looking for this trip last Saturday when runner-up over 1900m and connections resisted the temptation to run in the Colin Stephen on that card.
Waller has been patient with Unusual Legacy, having completed a short first prep in Australia and he was tipped out for the spring after a second-up victory in May.
Despite doing a lot wrong during the race, the six-year-old was super impressive when balancing up very late to finish with a length of the winner on Australian debut.
Que Tempesta then hung-in when under pressure second-up in the Naturalism at Caulfield, but that last run was another pass mark with these longer trips in mind.
It's well worth noting that his five overseas wins were all recorded when racing in the clockwise direction and the last three of those triumphs all came at 2200m+.
With 4.5kg less from his last Melbourne assignment and now getting up to his right trip, Que Tempesta could rise to a new level in this third-up tilt for the Hayes yard.
I'm not so sure on the Kingston Town Stakes form behind the first two, with the winner going to Melbourne and Ceolwulf dropping back to a mile for the Epsom Handicap.
One at bolters odds from that lead-up is Trust In You, who was eased back to the rear in that first Australian appearance and the Kiwi was chasing from a long way out.
Despite never being in winning contention from a hopeless position, he found the line well as well as most of the beaten brigade (second-fastest last 200m of the race).
Trust In You is a two-time winner over 2400m and while class is the main query, I could see him finishing top three/four and providing value for the exotic punters.
