The Stradbroke Handicap was first run in 1890 and along with being Queensland's most prestigious race, it's also one of the more famous handicaps on the Australian calendar.

2024 Stradbroke Handicap Best Bet - The Inevitable

Early in a campaign is the best time to catch this Tasmanian visitor, with half of his 16 career wins coming either first or second-up and his recent campaigns also support that.

Spelled after a third in the 2023 All-Star Mile, The Inevitable produced a cracker when resuming in Sydney last spring and with a better ride, I think he would've won the Epsom second-up.

His lead-up this prep is similar, with the veteran rattling home over 1350m first-up in the BRC Sprint and in the process, he recorded the fastest last 200m of the entire May 25 card.

Although he's versatile in regards to distance, 1400m has always been his pet trip (six wins and a second from 10 tries) and suited back on firm ground, this is his chance at land a Group 1.

Leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan is searching for his first Stradbroke win and he prepares Antino, who is one of the main chances in Queensland's most prestigious race.

The five-year-old returned with a win in the Victory Stakes and he backed that up with a sixth-of-ten finish in the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup, where he made inroads after settling at the rear.

That WFA Group 1 outing was a good second-up blowout with the Stradbroke in mind and while he's giving weight to some key rivals, this is the clear target race for Antino.

The son of Redwood has a terrific record at Eagle Farm (five wins and a third from seven attempts) and as history shows, drawing out in this Group 1 isn't necessarily a negative.

2024 Stradbroke Handicap Value Bet - Steparty

He was spelled after seemingly not running out a strong mile in the Caulfield Guineas and the jury was out on Steparty after a somewhat plain run via his sole summer appearance.

It was a pass mark fresh when not in the A1 ground up the Flemington straight and then vis his first Clockwise attempt, it was an encouraging second-up effort on June 1.

The Victorian colt was ridden cold in the Fred Best Classic as he drew the widest in a field of 18 and he made ground despite racing wide and laying-in early in the run home.

Now he's had a race day hit-out on the opposite leg, Steparty should improve and down in weights with 50.5kg, this three-year-old is dangerous with blinkers on for the first time.
