Being a Group 1 sprint race for fillies and mares that's run under weight-for-age conditions, the Robert Sangster is one of the more unique majors on the Australian racing calendar.

At $3 with Ladbrokes, Estrielle is favourite to win the 2024 Robert Sangster Stakes.

2024 Robert Sangster Stakes Best Bet - Estriella

Ciaron Maher has prepared the last two winners of the Robert Sangster Stakes and he's well placed to record a hat-trick, with Estriella one of the more exciting sprinters in Australia.

The three-year-old has progressed since a promising first campaign, with three wins from three starts this campaign and that includes a 2.5-length triumph at Listed level last start.

She proved her 1200m credentials second-up at Flemington and fillies have a good recent record in the Robert Sangster Stakes, accounting for three of the last six winners.

The Morphettville 1200m is a one-turn sprint circuit from a chute start, which makes wide barriers much less of an issue, while Estriella was ticking over nicely via a recent jump-out.

2024 Robert Sangster Stakes Next Best Bet - Benedetta

The Jason Warren-trained mare returned to winning form with a last start triumph in R N Irwin Stakes, which is one of traditional lead-up races to the Robert Sangster Stakes.

Although that victory was a touch workmanlike to the eye, Benedetta wasn't suited dropping in distance there to 1100m, as she's more effective at 1200m+ these days.

She competed over six furlongs the start prior when finishing fourth in the Newmarket Handicap, where the four-year-old only balanced up late (fastest last 200m of the race).

Benedetta did record the quickest last 200m of the entire Morphettville program when saluting a fortnight ago and with even luck off a strong speed, she should be thereabouts.

2024 Robert Sangster Stakes Value Bet - Roots

I like this placement from Chris Waller with Roots, with the champion trainer keeping her fresh and at 1200m off a lovely Sydney return, while she's completed a recent jump-out.

The dual Group 2 winner worked nicely in that Flemington heat on April 19, where she was particularly strong through the line and it indicates that she's spot on for this.

J-Mac reunites with the five-year-old, with the gun hoop having been aboard in four of her seven career wins and barrier nine suits, especially given her get-back racing pattern.

Roots isn't a dissimilar galloper to last year's winner Ruthless Dame, as both are more 1400m types, however, strong tempos in these sprint races allow them to get home.
