Ciaron Maher has prepared the last two winners of the Robert Sangster Stakes and the champion trainer is well placed to record a hat-trick, with Estriella (barrier 11) being one of the more exciting sprinters in Australia.

The three-year-old has progressed since a promising first campaign, with three wins from three starts this time prep and that includes a 2.5-length triumph at Listed level last start.

She proved her 1200m credentials second-up in the Inglis Sprint and fillies have a good recent record in the Robert Sangster Stakes, accounting for three of the last six winners.

I Am Me (barrier 2) is also trained by Ciaron Maher and this consistent mare was last seen finishing second in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes on March 23.

The five-year-old did complete a hat-trick of Group 1 placings via that most recent return, while her three stakes victories all came in 2023.

Benedetta (barrier 1) returned to winning form with a last start triumph in R N Irwin Stakes, which is one of tradional lead-up races to the Robert Sangster Stakes.

She saluted second-up over this distance last spring via the Group 3 Cockram Stakes at Caulfield.

Stretan Angel (barrier 10) was well held on return behind Estriella before an unlucky second in the Listed Redelva Stakes on April 13 and she's working towards a peak performance over 1200m.

The daughter of Harry Angel is trained by Phillip Stokes, who prepared Instant Celebrity (2021 winner) and he'll also saddle up Climbing Star (barrier 14), who caught the eye with a runner-up finish behind Benedetta in the R N Irwin Stakes.

Zapateo (barrier 3) was unlucky when third in last year's Robert Sangster Stakes and she followed that up with a placing in The Goodwood.

The Godolphin mare broke through at Group 1 level last start when taking out The Galaxy on Golden Slipper Day.

14 runners have accepted for the 2024 Robert Sangster Stakes.

Robert Sangster Stakes Winners

Being a Group 1 1200m sprint restricted to filllies and mares, the Robert Sangster Stakes is very unique to the Australian racing calendar, with this feature running alongside the Australasian Oaks.

A race that dates back to 1983, this sprint was given Group 1 status in 2005 and a name change from the Swettenham Stud Stakes to the Robert Sangster Stakes due to the prolific businessman, owner and breeder passing away in 2004 (Sangster was the principal of Swettenham Stud).

Black Caviar and Alinghi are two champions that have taken out the feature and have made this a target for some of the out-and-out sprinting mares.

Instant Celebrity (2021), Snapdancer (2022) and Ruthless Dame (2023) have won the last three editions of the Robert Sangster Stakes.
