Despite a disappointing last start effort in the TJ Smith Stakes, Passive Aggressive (barrier 1) is fancied to bounce back against her own sex in the Robert Sangster Stakes.

Her prior form was nearly faultless, with five wins from her first six outings and that includes a first-up autumn victory in the Challenge Stakes, where she beat Eduardo and Giga Kick.

Bella Nipotina (barrier 5) was a Group 1 winner when taking out the Manikato Stakes in dominant fashion last sprint and the five-year-old has remained consistent this campaign, with three placings from four starts (two at Group 1 level).

Rain affected ground will bring the Maher & Eustace-trained mare further into calculations.

The Maher & Eustace stable have also accepted with Marabi (barrier 7) and Ruthless Dame (barrier 12).

After a forgivable resumption in the Oakleigh Plate, Zapateo (barrier 11) has responded with back-to-back Sydney wins and she gets the services of champion jockey Damien Oliver for this assignment, who is aiming for a fourth win in the Robert Sangster Stakes.

The Godolphin mare is effective on any ground and her last three victories have come over 1200m.

Espiona (barrier 10) has been freshened-up after a Group 1 victory in the Coolmore Classic on March 11, with WFA conditions and a drop to 1200m the main queries for this four-year-old.

Chris Waller also prepares two-time Group 1 winner September Run (barrier 14), who was unlucky when finishing third as a beaten favourite in this feature last year.

Roch 'N' Horse (barrier 9) is another dual Group 1 winner and one that looks superbly placed against fillies & mares, given most of her better Australian form has come in elite company.

The locals will be represented by Another Award (barrier 13), a Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained mare that finished fourth in last year's edition, while Chris Bieg has sent two-time listed winner Diamonds (barrier 6) to contest this first-up.

A total of 14 runners have accepted for the 2023 Robert Sangster Stakes.

Robert Sangster Stakes Winners

Being a Group 1 1200m sprint restricted to filllies and mares, the Robert Sangster Stakes is quite unique to the Australian racing calendar, with this feature headlining the second day of the Adelaide Autumn Carnival.

A feature that dates back to 1983, this sprint was given Group 1 status in 2005 and a name change from the Swettenham Stud Stakes to the Robert Sangster Stakes due to the prolific businessman, owner and breeder passing away in 2004 (Sangster was the principal owner of Swettenham Stud).

Black Caviar and Alinghi are two champions that have taken out this Group 1 and have made this a target for some of the out-and-out sprinting mares.

Bella Vella (2020), Instant Celebrity (2021) and Snapdancer (2022) have won the last three editions of the Robert Sangster Stakes.
