2024 Queensland Oaks Best Bet - Good Banter
I've always been a big fan of this John O'Shea-trained filly, who bypassed the Australian Oaks despite taking out the Adrian Knox Stakes and she defeated Autumn Angel in that triumph.
Even with that galloper failing as fav in the Queensland Derby, that's still a key form reference and Good Banter was unlucky in three attempts leading into that Group 3.
Via The Roses, she ran like a horse who was seven weeks between runs, where the daughter of Tavistock peaked on her run approaching the 100m after looming into that race quite well.
Good Banter had only completed one very quiet tick-over trial since her April 6 victory, so there's clearly improvement to come and she's been aimed at this since that Randwick success.
She looked the winner a long way out in The Roses and while Molly Bloom didn't accelerate when it mattered, there were excuses for that fifth-placed finish.
The New Zealand-based galloper didn't let down on that soft Doomben surface and Blake Shinn backed that up in the post-race, where he felt that she was looking for firm ground.
Molly Blooms showed a nice turn-of-foot when saluting under Shinn on Boxing Day last year and it's well worth noting that she was only second-up in that latest appearance.
The Australian debut on a testing Heavy 10 surface also left her a little flat and now with a few prep runs completed, while finding more suitable conditions, she could explode here.
You always have to respect a John Sargent runner in any Oaks or Derby and he's searching for his second Queensland Oaks winner, having prepared Quintessential (2012 winner).
Unique Ambition doesn't have a traditional lead-up with a fitness base over similar trips, although I'm sceptical of the hard-fit runners here who coming through those races.
This three-year-old was a month between runs and covered ground when taking out a strong Scone Class 1 last start, where she was freshened after a third-up flop on a very testing surface.
She was good prior to that at Group 3 level, while Unique Ambition was a single-figure chance in the Group 1 Flight Stakes last spring and she was slow to recover in that feature.
