2024 Queensland Derby Best Bet - Autumn Angel
Peter Moody is aiming for his third Queensland Derby win and he's in the box-seat to achieve that this year, with the Moody & Coleman yard preparing Autumn Angel.
She took out a strong edition of the Australian Oaks, with the Victorian proving too tough for Group 1 winners Zardozi and Orchestral via her first 2400m attempt.
The Autumn Sun filly has tuned up for this with a second in the Rough Habit Plate on May 18, which was an ideal blowout given she was around five weeks between runs.
Her only time finishing out of the money was first-up in February, which was effectively a trial and in what isn't a vintage Queensland Derby, she's clearly the one to beat.
I thought he'd be a clear second market elect here had he drawn kinder, although at $8+ for a horse who is likely to settle back anyway, he's now a price for that risk.
Warmonger was a very unlucky last start in the South Australian Derby, where the son of War Decree was back from a alley, although Damian Lane still could've gone earlier.
Given he was held-up on return at Pakenham before enjoying a suck run in transit second-up, he did next to no work early in the prep, so there should be enough in reserve.
At present, Warmonger is the second best stayer in this field and in a lineup that has a lot of limited numbers from the local lead-up races, he has to be included here.
It's an unusual lead-up to the Queensland Derby and one that many will oppose given it's a 1700m Midway into a 2400m Group 1, however, Sonofdec clearly has ability.
As mentioned above, there's a lot of limited horses in this field from the local form references and this three-year-old showed brilliance at Scone when letting down off a slow speed.
He was only third-up and at start seven overall in what was an arrogant performance and he has furnished since a Grand Prix flop at Eagle Farm when deep into his first prep.
That previous interstate travel and look at this track will hold him in good stead, while for a talented X-Factor horse who is still progressing, Sonofdec is the pick of the blowouts.
