2023 Queensland Derby Best Bet - Special Swey
It took him seven runs to win his maiden in New Zealand before being transferred across the ditch to Chris Waller’s stable.
His past four runs have been over 2000m and he was a convincing winner of the Group 3 Rough Habit, at Doomben, which is the traditional lead-up.
In a positive move, apprentice Tyler Schiller sent him around the outside from the 1000 metres marker and took up the running.
He sustained the run and booted clear in the straight, holding his ground in what was a strong staying performance, with the 2400m ideal now.

2023 Queensland Derby Favourite - Kovalica
The more fancied of the Chris Waller’s runners, Kovalica really can’t really be faulted, although he does have to handle th seven day turanround.
He ran third in the Doomben Cup last week, having contested that WFA contest against older rivals as he missed the Rough Habit due to a foot abscess.
The son of Ocean Park is unbeaten from two Eagle Farm attempts and ran out a strong 2100m when taking out the Grand Prix here in December.
Kovalica’s breeding suggests he should stay and while class could see him home, his price is rock bottom now at $1.80.

2023 Queensland Derby Value Bet - The Vowels
He’s a horse you would love to have in your backyard (386k in prize money), as he gives his all every time he goes to the races.
The Edmonds stable have placed him nicely, winning five on the trot prior to his Queensland Guineas attempt, where he got home nicely behind Kovalica.
The Vowels chased hard behind Special Swey last start and finished second, so a 2400m tilt is in ordernow he's hard fit.
This gelding is very genuine and has clearly been set for the Queensland Derby, running here as clearly the pick of the local hopes.

Verdict
Kovalica is the one to beat, but I want $2.50+ and not sure we'll get that.
