Run under handicap conditions and contested up the Flemington straight over 1200m, the Newmarket Handicap is arguably Melbourne's most prestigious sprinting feature, with this Group 1 having been first run in 1874.

While champions such as Alinghi, Miss Andretti and Black Caviar feature on the honour roll, this Group 1 lends itself to many upset results and that's been evident over the last two years through Zoutori ($20) and Roch 'N' Horse ($101).

At $4.60 with Colossalbet, I Wish I Win heads the market for the 2023 Newmarket Handicap.

Newmarket Handicap 2023 Tips

2023 Newmarket Handicap Best Bet - Buenos Noches

The 1000m was ultimately a little too slick for this colt first-up in the Black Caviar Lightning, where he was cuddled up and allowed to finish off late.

While he wasn't impressive as I Wish I Win, who was home (last 200m) around one length faster, it was a very solid resumption with this being the target.

Now under handicap conditions, Buenos Noches meets the fav 3kg better off from that first-up clash and getting to 1200m second-up is ideal.

A strong tick-over trial win on March 3 at Warwick Farm will bring him on perfectly for the Newmarket and on each-way basis, he makes the most appeal.

2023 Newmarket Handicap Next Best Bet - I Wish I Win

A four-year-old that master trainer Peter Moody hasn't got to the bottom of, I Wish I Win will be the best horse to come from the 2023 Newmarket Handicap.

Despite 1400m-1500m being his pet range, perhaps the sprinting caper is much closer to the mark then the mile, as he hasn't won in three 1600m tilts.

The five furlongs appeared just a warm-up in the Black Caviar Lightning, but the son of Savabeel was specked late in the betting and he did launch.

Given he hasn't won at Group 1 level, the handicapper certainly hasn't missed him with a 56.5kg impost, but off that return, he has to be included.

2023 Newmarket Handicap Value Bet - September Run

As a two-time Group 1 winner, including one last autumn at WFA level, this Chris Waller-trained mare is one of the best weighted runners in the Newmarket.

September Run failed as a short-priced fav in the 2021 Newmarket and contesting this feature first-up last year, she managed a third on that occasion.

The five-year-old is another contender arriving off a Black Caviar Lightning resumption, where she loomed strongly on the inside of Nature Strip.

Fitness just gave out over the last 50m, which isn't uncommon with her early in preps and with improvement second-up, she's in the mix.
