Set for a sprinting campaign this autumn after getting as far as 1600m last spring, I Wish I Win produced an eye-catching return in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) when coming from the rear and finishing second to Coolangatta in that February 18 feature.

The bookies certainly didn't miss the run, with last year's Golden Eagle winner a $3.50 favourite via Ladbrokes to win the 2023 Newmarket Handicap.

In Secret ($4.80) was terrific in her only attempt over staight six at Flemington, recording a two length victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes last spring.

The Godolphin filly arrives off a similar pattern. having been narrowly defeated over 1400m in Sydney in the Surround Stakes and that was also the case last campaign when beaten by Jacquinot in the Golden Rose.

Private Eye ($6) proved his elite sprinting credentials with a runner-up finish in The Everest last spring and that followed a victory over this track/trip via the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes.

The Joseph Pride-trained gelding arrives to this first-up assignment off three lead-up trials.

Lofty Strike ($7) is one of the most in-form sprinters in Victoria, with this well bred colt backing up a return win in the Rubiton Stakes to finish second in the Oakleigh Plate.

Buenos Noches ($9) is another three-year-old that's well respected in the Newmarket Handicap markets.

Now carrying just 50.5kg under handicap conditions, this colt should also relish the extra furlong after a sound return in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes.

Newmarket Handicap Winners

Run under handicap conditions and contested up the Flemington straight over 1200m, the Newmarket Handicap is arguably Melbourne's most prestigious sprinting race.

While champions in Alinghi, Miss Andretti, Weekend Hussler and Black Caviar have saluted at short prices, this feature often lends itself to a long-priced winner, with Wanted ($13), Shamexpress ($15), The Quarterback ($21), Redkirk Warrior ($31), Sunlight ($13), Zoutori ($20) and Roch 'N' Horse ($101) among the last 13 winners of this event.

Bivouac (2020), Zoutori (2021) and Roch 'N' Horse (2022) have won the last three editions of the Newmarket Handicap.
