The Moir Stakes was traditionally run the night before the AFL Grand Final, however, it's now been contested early in September as a main lead-up for the Mankiato Stakes, which is now run on AFL Grand Final eve.

2024 Moir Stakes Best Bet - Estriella

The four-year-old has upside, with only eight starts from two preps and with further progression, she could be among Australia's leading sprinters this season.

Estriella did a bit wrong early, but she furnished with a campaign under her belt and Blake Shinn takes this fresh engagement (he was aboard for the hat-trick early this year).

While she had to settle for a fifth-of-fourteen via the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes before a spell, that trip away at the end of a prep could be the making of her.

Connections will have bigger targets in mind for Estriella (Everest), but she still needs to tick the Group 1 box and she can make a statement first-up in the Moir Stakes.

2024 Moir Stakes Next Best Bet - I Wish I Win

The Moody & Coleman-trained galloper broke a 14-month winning drought in his last winter appearance and he defeated an in-form Bella Nipotina in the process.

Although his main spring aim will The Everest, the Moir Stakes is a logical starting point early in the campaign and I Wish I Win now has some confidence under the belt.

He has been sparingly raced since taking out the 2022 Golden Eagle, but a three-run prep last time in and a shorter turnaround here suggests that they've got him right.

His gave 5kg to Coolangatta when runner-up via his only other try over this trip and the class runner of the field did look sharp when winning a jump-out last month.

2024 Moir Stakes Value Bet - Hayasugi

If any horse is suited by drawing out in this nine-horse field then it's Hayasugi, a filly who covered ground when taking out the Blue Diamond Stakes last campaign.

She was also afforded galloping room in both wins leading up to the hat-trick bid, where the Clinton McDonald-trained sprinter showed nice improvement from her first prep.

Given a target was already achieved and with a few minor issues post-race, I wouldn't look too much into the Golden Slipper flop and she was tipped out after that.

Her lead-up to the Moir Stakes has been good via a pair of jump-outs and three-year-old fillies have had recent success in this race (Coolangatta and She Will Reign).
