Vauban created a big impression on day one of Royal Ascot 2023, recording a 7.5-length victory as a well-supported market elect in the Copper Horse Handicap over 2847m.

The five-year-old has been switched from the hurdles to flat racing by trainer Willie Mullins, who did the same with Max Dynamite, a European galloper who placed in two Melbourne Cups.

After a Royal Ascot triumph, Vauban booked his 2023 Melbourne Cup slot with victory via the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes at Naas and at $8 with Neds, he's the current favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

Lunar Flare ($13) is on the second line of betting, a mare that confirmed her place in the Melbourne Cup via a dominant 5.5-length romp in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes on May 13.

Although Lunar Flare will be an eight-year-old in spring, the Grahame Begg-trained stayer has improved with age and being a daughter of Fiorente (2013 Melbourne Cup winner), the 3200m should hold no fears.

Silver Sonic, Tower Of London and Without A Fight all share a $14 quote, with the latter having impressed with two stylish performances over the recent Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Melbourne Cup Winners

The Melbourne Cup is one the world's most prestigious staying races and a highlight on the Australian sports calendar.

Being a 3200m handicap that attracts runners from across the globe, 'the race that stops a nation' is traditionally one of the toughest for punters, given the many different form lines.

Despite it being a challenging contest for all, the Melbourne Cup is the most popular betting race in Australia and one of the world's most famous sporting events.

Twilight Payment (2020), Verry Elleegant (2021) & Gold Trip (2022) have won the last three editions of the Melbourne Cup.
