2024 Manikato Stakes Best Bet - Growing Empire
Sepoy (2011) was the last colt to take out the Manikato Stakes, however, three-year-old filly Loving Gaby saluted in this feature for the Maher & Eustace stable in 2019.
Growing Empire is the leading three-year-old sprinter of his crop, with the in-form youngster having won his last four starts and that includes two victories this season.
With a Coolmore seemingly at his mercy via the initial plan of going through the Danehill Stakes, you really have to respect this aggressive placement from Ciaron Maher.
Only a lack of experience cost him on debut, but Growing Empire quickly atoned when saluting over this track/trip at start two and that Listed affair rated well.
She was the biggest eye-catcher in the Moir Stakes, where the Blue Diamond winner was first-up and she's another who will be suited up to 1200m in the Manikato Stakes.
The Clinton McDonald-trained filly hasn't finished outside of the top two in her last four Melbourne appearances, with a winning hat-trick recorded last summer.
I'm happy to put a line through the Golden Slipper failurelast prep, where there were excuses and as she showed in the Moir Stakes, Hayasugi has come up this campaign.
In six prior attempts around a bend, the closest that she's drawn to the rail is barrier seven in a nine horse field, so they now finally have some options from a low draw.
This Phillip Stokes-trained mare put somewhat of a bridesmaids tag to bed last prep when winning two of four outings and she placed either side of those triumphs.
Her most dominant display came first-up in the Matrice Stakes and third-up, Climbing Star was ridden colder from a wide draw when taking out the Robert Sangster Stakes.
While it's a Group 1 event restricted to fillies and mares, she defeated the likes of I Am Me, Benedetta, Estriella and Passive Aggressive in that Adelaide feature.
Keeping her to sprint trips suited in that autumn campaign and while she was workmanlike when winning her last jump-out, blinkers do back on for race day.
