2024 Inglis Sires' Best Bet - Storm Boy
Although he had to settle for third as a beaten fav in the Golden Slipper, Storm Boy had excuses in his first career defeat, with the son of Justify missing the kick a fortnight ago.
He was also on the inferior ground on that Golden Slipper Day meeting and the main query heading into that feature was if he was looking for 1400m after his Pago Pago triumph.
The son of Justify now steps up to seven furlongs and along with a wider draw being in his favour this time around, he also gets J-Mac back in the saddle for the Inglis Sires'.
Storm Boy drifted out in the market ahead of the Golden Slipper and while I predict the same will happen here, with $2.60 a short quote, I'm not jumping off him just yet.
Visually, she produced the best closing effort in the Golden Slipper and the clock backed it up, with Manaal recording the fastest last 800m/600m/400m and 200m of the race.
That was her first time finishing out of the money in four starts and with a kinder draw/a few more favours in transit, the Michael Freedman-trained is likely fighting out the finish.
Over sprint distances, she had lacked the brilliance of Lady Of Camelot, which was evident first-up at 1100m, but she's the more suited of the two over a testing seven furlongs.
Manaal will likely be ridden cold again from a wide draw, but a switch to the bigger circuit of Randwick is in her favour (unbeaten here) and her best win came on soft ground.
I have time for this Victorian visitor, a Busuttin & Young-trained colt who caught the eye here on December 30 before a Magic Millions tilt and he covered ground in the 2YO Classic.
He was freshened-up after that Queensland visit before resuming over this trip in the VRC Sires', where he had to overcome trouble after settling a long way back from a wide draw.
Although he couldn't threaten Traffic Warden in that Flemington Group 2, Vianarra balanced up late when finally clear and he found the line strongly (race fastest last 200m).
Given the break heading into that most recent run, he's still open to improvement vs those who have had grand finals and he now draws low after wide gates via his last two outings.
