Japanese visitors have won three out of the last four runnings of the Hong Kong Vase and via three-year-old Lebensstil, they have a good chance of building on that strong recent record.

The son of Reel Steel has won three of six career starts, with his last two victories coming at Group level and he ticked the 2200m box in the latest when taking out the Group 2 Asahi Hai St.Lite Kinen at Nakayama on September 18.

Lebensstil heads a competitive 2023 Hong Vase market with Unibet Australia, where $3.60 is available for the market elect.

Another leading Japanese contender is Shahryar ($4), a two-time Group 1 winner who was last seen finishing third over this distance in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita on November 4.

The 2021 Japanese Derby winner recorded his second major success earlier this year when successful in the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic.

Aidan O'Brien is the most successful trainer in Hong Kong Vase history, preparing three winners of this 2400m feature and via two-time Group 1 winning filly Warm Heart ($6), he has a strong chance in the 2023 edition.

Last-start Japanese Group 2 winner Zeffiro ($8) rounds out the single-figure chances for the 2023 Hong Kong Vase.

Hong Kong Vase Winners

The Hong Kong Vase is one of four Group 1's run at their International meeting, with the 2023 card to be contested at Sha Tin on Sunday, December 10.

Worth HK$24,000,000, which equates to just over AUD 4.6 million, the Hong Kong Vase dates back to 1994 and it was promoted to Group 1 status in 2000.

The Hong Kong staying ranks are generally thin, which has seen the overseas dominate this 2400m feature, with only three of the 29 winners prepared in Hong Kong.

Mogul (2020), Glory Vase (2021) and Win Marilyn (2022) have won the last three editions of the Hong Kong Vase.
