First being run and won in 1978, the race was originally known as the Peter Pan Stakes after the dual Melbourne Cup winner, but was renamed the Golden Rose after its grading was dropped from Group Two to and unlisted race, despite a prize money increase to $1 million.

The race was upgraded to a Group One event in 2009 and since then has become a stallion making race which is evident with recent winners that includes Zoustar, Exosphere, Trapeze Artist and The Autumn Sun who are all well in demand and popular in the current breeding climate.

For the 2020 edition, this years Golden Slipper winner Farnan is the current $6 favourite with Sportsbetting.com.au

This Waterhouse & Bott-trained colt has only tasted defeat once which was via an unlucky run in the 2020 Magic Millions 2yo Classic but he rebounded to win a hat-trick of Sydney two-year-old sprints which culminated in a comfortable Slipper victory.

The dominant 2020 JJ Atkins champion Rothfire is the second market elect and unlike Farnan, is already proven at seven furlongs.

There's a host of other competitors who could easily step up to this level with added maturity with Peltzer, Mamaragan and Hungry Heart just three among a quality crop that have a stack of improvement to come.
