2024 Epsom Handicap Best Bet - Berkshire Shadow
In big handicap fields, there's generally value and at $20+ in the early markets, Berkshire Shadow is a big price, arriving to the Epsom Handicap third-up from a spell.
European imports can take a prep to acclimatize and that appears to be the case with Berkshire Shadow, who didn't figure in his first four starts for Ciaron Maher.
Off a very cold trial, the grey was a notable drifter first-up at Rosehill and with no intent via that return outing, he overcame trouble to finish off well over 1300m.
With a kinder run, Berkshire Shadow may have taken out the Cameron Handicap at Newcastle, where he stuck on bravely for third despite covering ground in that Group 3.
He also wouldn't have looked out of place in The Metropolitan, but Joe Pride doesn't want to stretch Ceolwulf out to staying distances, with the gelding back to a mile here.
The son of Tavistock appears more effective in the 1600m-2000m range for now and that's despite a J-Mac pearler getting in the way of him winning the Australian Derby.
Ceolwulf was gelded ahead of this campaign and he bounced off an even fresh outing to salute second-up over 1500m before contesting the Kingston Town Stakes.
Four-year-old's profile well for the Epsom Handicap (15 winners since 2000) and with the right platform to be peaking fourth-up, he's clearly among the main chances.
With no winning first-up form to his name, it was no surprise to see Kintyre in need of the gallop in the Tramway Stakes, especially given the hot tempo of that race.
The four-year-old then covered ground via a fourth-of-twelve finish second-up in the Bill Ritchie Handicap and that Group 3 is one of the main Epsom lead-up's.
A galloper who was thereabouts throughout most of his three-year-old season, Kintyre found winning form deep into his last prep with victories over 2000m and 1600m.
Not only will be approaching peak fitness for this Group 1, but the gelding also plummets in the weights to 50kg and he can settle close to the speed under Cejay Graham.
