With less than 2.5 lengths separating first to eighth on the line, the 2023 Cox Plate was a thrilling edition, where the Hong Kong-based Romantic Warrior denied Mr Brightside and Alligator Blood to record a famous victory.

The Danny Shum-trained galloper returned home and brought up another narrow feature win, with the six-year-old holding off a brave Luxembourg when triumphant in the 2023 Hong Kong Cup on December 10.

At $6 with PlayUp, Romantic Warrior is favoured to defend his Cox Plate crown in 2024, while Fangirl ($10) is the second line of betting

The Chris Waller-trained mare was one of many runners who were unlucky in the 2023 Cox Plate and she's been set for the spring after a short autumn campaign, which included a win and a second from two outings.

While his recent autumn form tapered off, Mr Brightside ($14) still features highly in the Cox Plate futures market.

He shades Without A Fight ($15), who could be set for a WFA path this spring after completing a famous Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double in 2023.

Cox Plate Winners

The Cox Plate is without question the greatest two minutes in Australian racing, a 2040m weight-for-age contest run at the cauldron Moonee Valley.

Inaugurated in 1922 when Tangalooma took out the event, it’s a genuine who’s who of racing that’s taken this event out.

The champions list includes the likes of four-time winner Winx, three-time winner Kingston Town, star galloper Northerly and the inimitable Phar Lap.

State Of Rest (2021), Anamoe (2022) and Romantic Warrior (2023) have won the last three editions of The W.S. Cox Plate.
