2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes Best Bet - Stretan Angel
While there are many paths towards a Coolmore Stud Stakes, with many past winners and current contenders dropping in trip from other assignments, I've got a lean towards the out-and-out sprinters in an open edition.
Fillies do have a good recent record in this feature, having won three of the last five editions and the leading female hope in 2023 is Stretan Angel, who won the Group 2 Danehill Stakes on October 7.'
That form through Archo Narcho is starting to read well, while you can also tie it through Cylinder, given I Am Stoppable was a close-up third behind the current fav when resuming at Caulfield.
Importantly, Stretan Angel was able to slide forward (without cover) and given they often don't go as fast up the Flemington straight, her ability to sprint off any tempo will hold her in good stead.
2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes Next Best Bet - King's Gambit
Given he was only first-up and facing the starter for just the fifth time in his career, King's Gambit was unfairly maligned after his return loss here, where the colt raced keenly after taking the lead.
Admittedly, the saloon passage opened, however, the key to him was seemingly found via his Rosehill bounce back, where the son of I Am Invincible was able to produce late off a colder ride.
Kept on the fresh side following that October 7 triumph, similar tactics were adopted via an October 27 jump-out here, where King's Gambit was allowed to find his feet early and then finish late.
On talent alone, I believe he's the best sprinter in this land and now with confidence, along with experience up the straight ahead of his target race, Team Snowden could be timing their run perfectly.
2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes Value Bet - Scheelite
Although he was one of many who was unsuited in the Caulfield Guineas, I suspect a mile is a tad far for this three-year-old, albeit he was still competitive there and found trouble late in the piece.
That performance and the Guineas Prelude effort suggests there isn't necessarily that much between Scheelite and Steparty, with this colt unsuited all prep via four outings at Caulfield.
Spelled after a short autumn prep with a spring assault in mind, the Ken & Kasey Keys-trained galloper was unbeaten in that first campaign and a Flemington straight-track win was among them.
The question will be how much petrol is left in the tank, however, coming out of a slowly run race helps in that regard and being one of only three straight-track winners in the field is also a tick.
