Godolphin won last year's Coolmore Stud Stakes with In Secret and via Cylinder, they have a strong chance of going back-to-back in this three-year-old sprint feature.

After back-to-back wins to open his campaign, the son of Exceed And Excel was unlucky when third over 1400m of the Golden Rose when covering ground and then back to 1200m via The Everest, he was competitive against older rivals.

At $4.50 with BlueBet, Cylinder shares favouritism with King's Gambit, a very talented colt from the Snowden yard who seemed to have turned a corner with a Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes victory.

King's Gambit was only second-up in that last appearance and he's had experience up the Flemington straight, having contested the Listed Poseidon Stakes fresh.

Coolmore Stud and Chris Waller teamed up in 2021 with Home Affairs, who bolted in with that edition and this year they have Golden Slipper winner Shinzo ($7).

While he's fitter and is seemingly better placed here third-up, this superbly bred colt has been disappointing in both spring outings.

Ozzmosis ($9) opened his account with a winning hat-trick before a third in the Roman Consul Stakes and while a strong 1200m remains a query, he's a fast three-year-old who makes his own luck on the speed.

It's a deep betting race, with quality three-year-olds in I Am Unstoppable, Steparty, Stretan Angel and Veight all at double-figure prices.

Coolmore Stud Stakes Winners

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is the premier three-year-old sprint run over the Melbourne Spring Carnival and a stallion-making race for the colts.

Past winners of this 1200m feature that have gone on to have successful stud careers include Encosta De Lago, Zoustar, Brazen Beau and Merchant Navy.

Originally run as a two-year-old autumn affair, champion sprinter Vain won the first three-year-old edition back in 1969 and in 2006, this sprint was given Group 1 status when moved from September to its current Derby Day slot.

September Run (2020), Home Affairs (2021) and In Secret (2022) have won the last three editions of the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
