Australian Oaks 2023 Tips

2023 Australian Oaks Best Bet - Pennyweka

The last galloper to record a New Zealand Oaks/Australian Oaks double was Bonneval and this set-up isn't dissimilar from the 2017 Australian Oaks winner.

Trainer Jim Wallace has spaced out the campaign nicely for Pennyweka, with freshen-up's installed either side of a two-run summer stint in Jan.

Over a testing 2400m at Trentham, a big circuit with an uphill climb in the run home, she took out the New Zealand Oaks by three lengths on soft ground.

A proven stayer that should still have something in the locker given she's only had had two autumn runs, this three-year-old also handles all surfaces.

2023 Australian Oaks Next Best Bet - Polygon

This kiwi has followed a different path to Pennyweka, with the Lance Noble-trained filly set for a New South Wales prep, rather than a hit-and-run mission.

The betting drift told the story first-up in the Kembla Grange Classic, Polygon was still okay over the mile, but was clearly in need of the run there.

With another cold ride, she was one of the strongest through the line from the off-speed brigade in the Vinery Stud Stakes, which is the key lead-up race.

From barrier five, Brett Prebble can settle closer this time and although firmer ground may be preferable, there's a sense of timing here third-up.

2023 Australian Oaks Value Bet - Jolted

Regardless off the lead-up form, you have to respect any John Sargent filly when it comes an Oaks, especially the genuine out-and-out staying types.

By Deep Impact and out of Abbey Marie, a classy Mick Kent galloper that won the 2016 Australasian Oaks, Jolted will have no issue with 2400m.

With a solid fitness base, this filly stepped to the 2100m last start and broke her maiden at Newcastle, where she was four weeks between runs.

There's an obvious query on her class, hence the quote, although with this distance in mind, there wasn't much seperating these from the Vinery.
