This is a stallion making race for many of the colts, and in the past we have seen the likes of Zabeel, Shamus Award, Wandjina and Palentino all going on to stud duties.

At $2.40 with BlueBet, Riff Rocket hads the betting for the 2024 Australian Guineas.

2024 Australian Guineas Tips

2024 Australian Guineas Best Bet - Riff Rocket

The Group 3 CS Hayes is the traditional lead-up to the Australian Guineas and Riff Rocket was first-up there with a penalty for being a Group 1 winner, being fresh off a Derby prep.

Although there's some very capable rivals from the CS Hayes who are lining up here, I'm struggling to go past the Chris Waller-trained gelding when assessing that last start reference.

Even with improvement to come over a more suitable distance in the Australian Guineas, Riff Rocket was still too brilliant over 1400m and he's won his last three at Flemington.

He got away with 2500m of the VRC Derby on ability and connections feel the same, as he'll be kept in the 1600m-200m range this campaign and a mile could be the sweet spot.
2024 Australian Guineas Next Best Bet - Veight

The three-year-old defeated mainly older rivals when first-up over 1200m in the Australia Stakes and the colt is still aiming to get a Group 1 win on the resume this campaign.

Without threatening in the CF Orr Stakes, I felt Veight acquitted himself well against older rivals WFA level and last Saturday's Futurity Stakes trifecta was produced from that race.

In terms of quality, that's comfortably the best last-start form in this field, as he's now back against a suspect three-year-old crop after clashing with Mr Brightside and co.

As a big brute of a horse from the McEvoy yard who is versatile, there's similarities with Hey Doc, who won the 2016 Australian Guineas despite being more adept at the sprinting caper.
2024 Australian Guineas Value Bet - Zipaway

This galloper was very genuine in Perth, winning three times and placing three times from eight starts, while the other two runs resulted in fourth-place finishes at Listed level.

Zipaway finished alongside Dom To Shoot and Zaaki in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes, which is terrific form coming back to three-year old grade and he won a hot WA Guineas before that.

He never appeared to be travelling when fresh in the Autumn Stakes via his Melbourne debut, but he made ground before peaking late on his effort (second fastest last 200m).

Although Zipaway had some residual fitness from the Perth Carnival, that was clearly an intended blowout and with improvement to come for a target race, he's very dangerous here.
