After rounding out his spring campaign with a narrow win over 2500m in the Victoria Derby, Riff Rocket proved too sharp first-up at seven furlongs via the Group 3 CS Hayes on February 17, which is the traditional lead-up race to the Australian Guineas.

A Chris Waller-trained gelding who has won his last three attempts at Flemington, Riff Rocket will be suited up to a mile and as a result of his brilliant return, Ladbrokes have him as a $2.80 favourite to win the 2024 Australian Guineas.
King Colorado ($5) caught the eye first-up in the Group 2 Manfred takes on January 26, where the Ciaron Maher-trained colt got home for second in a leader-dominated 1200m race and he backed that up wiht a runner-up finish behind Riff Rocket in the CS Hayes.
A Group 1 winner over the mile as a two-year-old when successful in the JJ Atkins, he didn't quite go on with last spring, although there were excuses, which included an unlucky return against older rivals in the Winx Stakes.
Veight ($8) sits on the third line of betting, a McEvoy-trained colt who resumed with a victory in the Group 2 Australian Stakes on January 27 and he followed that with a fourth at WFA level in the CF Orr Stakes over 1400m.
Verdad ($10) is another coming out of the CS Hayes, with the son of Justify finishing third in that key form race, while he arguably should'ver beaten the subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner second-up over this trip in spring.
Following a return upset win over Southport Tycoon ($15) in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes on February 10, Snow Patrol ($15) has been a big firmer in the Australian Guineas market, while WA Visitor Zipaway ($15) finished third in that same Caulfield event.

Australian Guineas Winners
The Australian Guineas is Melbourne's premier three-year-old race of the autumn carnival, with this Group 1 contested over the mile at Flemington.
It's a relatively new race on the Australian calendar, gaining Group 1 status one year after its inception in 1986 and the race was known as the Australasian Guineas until 2004.
Despite its rather short history, The Australian Guineas has a strong honour roll, with Zabeel, Mahogany, Reset, Apache Cat, Miss Finland, Mystic Journey and Alligator Blood among the famous winners of this feature.
Lunar Fox (2021), Hitotsu (2022) and Legarto (2023) have won the last three editions of the Australian Guineas.
