2022 Ascot Gold Cup Entries

Alan King's Trueshan rounded off last season with victories in the Goodwood Cup, Prix du Cadran and the Long Distance Cup here at Ascot. Hollie Doyle's mount was cut into clear favouritism for this Group One after a comfortable win at Nottingham, but the prospect of quick ground has caused Trueshan to slide down the Ascot Gold Cup betting.

Trueshan has been replaced at the head of the betting by Aidan O'Brien's Kyprios, who has won the Vintage Crop and Levermoss Stakes at home in Ireland this season. Former three-time Gold Cup winner, Stradivarius bounced back to winning form on his reappearance at York and John Gosden's star will have another crack at landing his fourth Gold Cup on Thursday.

Last year's Gold Cup runner-up, Princess Zoe limbered up for her return to the Royal Meeting by winning the Sagaro Stakes here at Ascot, and Tony Mullins' mare can also be backed at a single-figure price. After winning the stayers race on All-Weather Finals Day, Nigel Twiston-Davies has rewarded Earlofthecotswold with a run in this famous race.

Last year's Derby and St Leger runner-up, Mojo Star will make his reappearance at Royal Ascot Willie Mullins' Burning Victory, Brian Ellison's Tashkhan, French raider Bubble Smart and Jamie Osbourne's Alignak round off the field.

2022 Ascot Gold Cup Tips

Trueshan will only run if there's juice in the ground and the current weather forecast won't fill Alan King with much hope. While Kyprios has been very impressive on his two starts this season and remains open to improvement, Aidan O'Brien's charge hasn't beaten much in either of those races and offers very little value at his current price. Stradivarius bounced back to winning form on his reappearance at York, but he's clearly not the force he once was.

Princess Zoe may do her best work on soft ground, but Tony Mullins' mare ran a screamer to place second in this race 12 months ago and scooted past some decent rivals to win the Sagaro Stakes on her reappearance.

We wouldn't dissuade anyone from backing Princess Zoe each-way. but at a longer price TASHKHAN.appeals.

Ellison's charge has been seen twice this season, losing out by three lengths in both the Sagaro Stakes and the Yorkshire Cup. On his reappearance at Ascot, Tashkhan was ridden prominently behind a rapid pace and couldn't maintain the gallop. At York, Tashkhan was very slowly away, but plugged on well down the rail to place third behind Stradivarius.

Last season, Tashkhan stayed on powerfully to finish a close second to Trueshan in the Long Distance Cup here at Ascot and this excessive test of stamina should be right up his street.

Verdict

Tashkhan has proven over the last 12 months that he's a stayer to be feared and he appeals each-way at big odds in the Ascot Gold Cup.
