Epsom Day Best Bets & Value Tips For Saturday, October 5

Spring racing in Sydney heads back to Royal Randwick this week for a nine race card headlined by the Group One Epsom and Group One Metropolitan.

Will pay to monitor any patterns with the track early as it's currently rated at a Soft 5 and there's some showers expected on race day

Epsom Day Favorites

Race 4 No. 1 Funstar - $1.85 via BetEasy

If the market and field size are any indication than it looks a two horse war between Funstar and Probabeel for the 2019 Flight Stakes.

This half sister to Youngstar was brave second up in the Tea Rose Stakes on September 21 when getting the better of the highly talented Libertini before just surviving a late surge from Probabeel.

No doubt Probabeel does win that race in another stride but worth noting that Funstar did have to be roust up a little early to tack on to the leaders and as such, did cover more ground where she was entitled to peak late.

There's very little between the two favorites with Funstar as the narrow market elect perhaps due to having the tactical advantage, however with many bookmaker promotions, you could support either with insurance back for second or third.

Epsom Day Roughies

Race 3, No. 1 Mighty Lucky - $27.00 via Sportsbet

Just one of plenty open races on this meeting and despite this seasoned galloper well and truly hitting veteran status now, he isn't without a knockout hope here.

Certainly wasn't disgraced when resuming at Caulfield on August 31 when making up some ground late and followed that up with an honest midfield effort at group three level after covering ground.

After twelve months off the scene, he should strip a lot fitter now third up and he is dropping well in class back to benchmark level.

Gets nice relief with 3kg claim of Billy Owen and whilst he won't want it too wet, he can give cheek at huge odds.

Epsom Day Value

Race 6 No. 8 Youngstar - $7.50 via Sportsbet

Not shying away from the fact that she has burnt enough punters over her last few campaigns but if we take out the last start effort, she was tracking into this perfectly.

Sound fresh performance in the Winx Stakes from this daughter of High Chaparral and despite never threatening to figure, she bounced off that with an eye-catching run from the rear on September 7 from a hopeless position.

Giving every impression bow that the step up to 2000m is ideal and in the small field, is naturally going to be tack on easier and will be placed from the gate if she can race towards the outside.

There's a query on all of these favorites and she may be ready to pounce.

Epsom Day Best Bet

Race 5 No. 2 Classique Legend

One of the more progressive sprinters in the country is this four-year-old from the Les Bridge stable who certainly lost no admirers via his fresh run where his condition just gave out late behind Pierata.

Sure to strip fitter, has now shown he is capable of taking that next step in class whilst importantly, is adept in any conditions this potentially soft Randwick track will throw up,

Another key attribute in these small fields is versatility and Nash Rawiller may elect to park outside the early leader Home Of The Brave and dictate the field from there.

He can storm further into Everest calculations with a second-up win in the Premiere Stakes.

Randwick Best Bet: Classique Legend - $2.30 via Ladbrokes

Epsom Day Next Best Bet

Race 9 No. 8 Handle The Truth

There's plenty of short ones on the card that need no further encouragement but on what looks a cracking opening price, this four-year-old by Star Witness can give the get-out stakes an almighty shake.

Just kept ticking along and through the grades at the back-end of his last campaign which culminated in a soft victory on July 13 before being tipped out and the two trials leading into this have been excellent.

Currently one of the leading chances for the $1.2 million Kosciuszko and with that being the target makes this somewhat of a query, he also counters them thoughts by having won three from four first-up attempts.

Handles any going and can position up handy for Blaike McDougall who brings him down to 53kg with the claim.

Randwick Next Best Bet: Handle The Truth - $6.50 via Bet365

I suspect Classique drifts out a shade more on race day but is our best bet on the meeting.

Handle The Truth in the last looks a cracking each way chance providing the inside holds up.

This may be the right set-up for Youngstar stepping up to 2000m and perhaps a peanut or two on Mighty Lucky each way in Race 3 if you're chasing a roughie..
