Black Opal Stakes Day 2020 Tips

The two-day Canberra Racing Carnival kicks off on Sunday with the Group Three Black Opal Stakes headlining the opening day where the rail is in the 3m position.

After publishing this on Friday when the track a Heavy 8 surface, an upgrade has come with it now being in the Soft 6 range.

Black Opal Stakes Day Best Bet

Race 6 No. 12 Sausedge

I have little doubt that this Listed National Sprint is a target for this underrated mare who is unbeaten from both second-up runs to date.

Prepared by the strong local yard of Matthew Dale, she had to lump 60.5kg fresh on February 21 here where she settled at the rear from a wide alley and launched late to just miss.

She drops 6.5kg off that performance for the rise to seven furlongs which suits and despite stepping up to this level for the first time, it's a very thin stakes race in terms of quality.

With a city win already on her resume and having a lot of upside, this looks an excellent opportunity for Sausedge to get a black-tpye victory as our best bet on Black Opal Stakes Day.

Black Opal Stakes Day Value Bet

Race 3 No. 8 Fusca

This locally trained four-year-old can be a big improver now third-up from a spell and dropping in grade.

With three wins and four placings from her thirteen career starts so far, she was always going to take a few runs to hit her straps which her record supports as she only started prospering last time when stepping up to this 1400m trip.

Whilst Fusca goes back up sharply in the weights, she comes well down in grade to Benchmark 65 level after getting fit versus superior opposition leading into this.

Fusca does appear to handle most surfaces and with star hoop Hugh Bowman taking the reins, she's the value here with a possible peak performance coming.

Black Opal Stakes Day Roughie

Race 7 No. 10 Tamerlane

An interesting Black Opal Stakes for 2020 awaits us where it's been a tough one to sort out and has been made more difficult to assess with the one time popular Golden Slipper favourite Cellsabeel taking her place as the short market elect.

It's impossible to gauge where she's at (watch the betting) as there was clearly a setback following the huge fresh win and she was subsequently poor in the Silver Slipper on February 22 (multiple scratchings now either side of that).

By Golden Horn and out of a daughter to the 2007 Golden Slipper in Forensics is this Godolphin representative who's been one to follow from our trial reports now twice, which includes his most recent hit-out on February 25.

Unconventional going straight into such a hot race, however we must respect this stable who have trained the last two winners of the Black Opal Stakes and a double figure price (has been supported early), he could be the blowout.

Verdict

Sausedge looks primed for the Listed National Sprint in Race 6 at Canberra this Sunday.

Have to respect the drop in grade and rise in trip for Fusca in Race 3 with Bowman to ride.

A tough Black Opal Stakes to get involved in but Tamerlane is the interesting runner from Godolphin.
