Balaklava Tips September 16

Atlas Event & Party Hire / SABOIS Maiden Plate Tips (Race 4)

Balaklava Best Bet - Race 4 No. 13 Victoria Quay

The powerful McEvoy & Vorster combination team-up with this three three-year-old that had excuses on her debut in town and is expected to improve sharply here with much more in her favour.

Victoria Quay was a drifting second favorite prior to that debut ($3.50-$4.80) and despite seemingly tracking into the race well at the top of the straight, she proceeded to be her own worst enemy when ducking in severely and depsite being green, balanced up strongly over the last 50 metres.

A key gear change has been delivered with the blinkers now being applied to this daugher of Dundeel who looks as though she'll relish the rise to a mile which her breeding also supports.

With natural improvement off the debut and from barrier nine which can be favorable on this circuit, Victoria Quay can get on the board at start two as the best bet on Balaklava Cup day.

TQCSI Balaklava Cup Tips (Race 7)

Balaklava Cup Tip - Race 7 No. 2 Savatoxl

Although he has drawn out, this gelding has the speed to overcome the gate in what's a competitive 2020 edition of the Listed Balaklava Cup.

He's been one of the more exicting gallopers in the Northern Territory where he's won 12 of 18 starts (other attempt was in Brisbane) and simply didn't run out the 2000m last start in the Darwin Cup.

Now under the care of Tony & Calvin McEvoy for a campaign down south, Savatoxl was outstanding in a September 4 trial from Gawler when reeling in group three-winning stable mate Sisstar under a strong hold.

Jockey Jason Holder remains in the saddle from that hit-out and looking to bowl along early over a mile, a trip which he's won four of five attempts over, Savatoxl may take some catching.

TAB Mares Benchmark 58 Handicap (Heat 1 Viddora Series) Tips (Race 9)

Balaklava Value Bet - Race 9 No. 7 Deluxe Design

This mare was ordinary second-up when failing a heavy track, but off the fresh effort here in a tougher race when making ground in the worst part of the track, she's in the mix.

The addition of the tongue-tie may also go some way to explaining that failure at Gawler (choked down) and even though she didn't handle the testing conditions, she was beaten before the sprint went on.

Winkers also go on Deluxe Design for this third-up tilt in a bid to sharpen her up and although the winning strike rate is poor, she's been competitve in much stronger races than this over the journey.

Out wide at Balaklava is generally no disadvantage and looking to launch late off a good speed under Jake Toeroek, Deluxe Design can figure in a race of this strength.

Verdict

Victoria Quay was good on debut and is expected to improve in Race 4 over a more suitable journey with a few key gear changes.

The speedy Savatoxl creates some interest in the Balaklava Cup off a strong recent trial.

Deluxe Design had excuses second-up and can bounce back in the last from Balaklava.
