Ascot Racing Tips For March 14 2020

The Listed JC Roberts and Natasha Stakes are the main two races on the Ascot program this Saturday.

Whilst the track is currently in the Good 4 range, upwards of 15mm of rain is predicted on race day and the rail is in the 9m position.

Ascot Best Bet

Race 5 No. 3 Tollman

This lightly raced gelding has been a model of consistency in seven career starts to date and now in his second campaign, is improving with every run.

With three wins and four placings, the furthest he's been defeated is 0.42 lengths and following a tradesman-like win fresh at the midweeks here on February 19, we saw a more brilliant version of him at Bunbury when he took a sit.

Now with that style of victory, he's shown a great versatility that a lot of his opposition here don't have where whilst this four-year-old is expected roll forward, there's at least a plan b there if they need it.

Respecting the class of Dark Choice but with potentially other plans with that mare being so early in her prep, this looks a nice chance for Tollman to get a deserving Saturday win as the best bet at Ascot.

Ascot Next Best Bet

Race 8 No. 1 Tuscan Queen

At the price for clearly the highest rated filly in the Listed Natasha Stakes, she gets one more chance from me today third-up.

The 2019 Group One Kingston Town Classic favourite returned via the Challenge Stakes on February 15 which was dominated by a stable mate in Superstorm and she just looked there to go around.

She was well fancied and rightfully so as the class runner in the Ascot 1000 Guineas a fortnight ago and whilst it was failed attempt, it was very inconclusive due to some poor decisions which gave her zero chance of achieving anything positive.

I actually prefer the wider alley as Hall can take an early or mid-race initiative with momentum and bank on the ability of Tuscan Queen returning her a winner, rather then praying for luck when the race is already over.

Ascot Value Bet

Race 7 No. 4 Apache Pass

Off the flashing light Lex Piper run two weeks ago, there's a big discrepancy in the market between this gelding and the $2.70 favourite in Cryptic Wonder.

Threading a passage through late under Brad Parnham, this Lindsay Smith-trained galloper was strong late and was in front only fifty metres past the post, suggesting that the extra furlong of the JC Roberts will be ideal.

He's steadily improving with each run and in that last start performance, was jumping up from six furlongs to the mile, so is expected to strip fitter with that run under his belt.

Apache Pass has drawn out but was likely heading back irrespective and on an each way basis, he's the value option in this interesting listed affair.
