The LIV Invitational Series roster of the world's best golfers continues to grow, with big names from the PGA Tour joining the controversial series for the second event at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. Who will emerge the winner in Portland?

Nine new players have switched to the LIV Golf International Series, including Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Abraham Ancer, Pat Perez, Carlos Ortiz, Matthew Wolff, Eugenio Chacarra and Yuki Inamori.

Oliver Fisher, Pablo Larrazabal, Kevin Yuan, Oliver Bekker, Ratchanon Chantananuwat, Viraj Madappa, Andy Ogletree, David Puig and JC Ritchie will not feature at this event.

Ten past Major winners will be in the lineup, including DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Koepka, Graeme McDowell, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, Reed and Charl Schwartzel.

These are our selections for the title this weekend.

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson's first four appearances on the PGA Tour at the start of the year yielded excellent results of T25 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T8 at the Saudi International, MC at the Genesis Invitational and T9 at the Players Championship.

The world's number 17th ranked golfer had an average finish of T39 at the Valspar Championship but performed very well at the WGC Dell Technologies to place fourth overall and at the Masters, finishing T12.

The 37-year-old's last four starts have been poor to decent, missing the cut at the RBC Heritage, finishing T59 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, missing the cut at the PGA Championship, but found some form with a T24 place at the US Open.

Johnson can challenge for victory in Portland as he has had four top-10 places this year, including 8th overall at the inaugural LIV Invitational Series in London.

Abraham Ancer

Abraham Ancer had only one top-10 place in his first seven tournament starts on the PGA Tour in 2022, when he finished T8 at the Saudi International in February.

After missing the cut at the Valspar Championship, the Mexican star produced a top T5 finish at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.

Ancer could not carry that form into the Masters, where he missed the cut, and he disappointed his fans at the Mexico Open after finishing T42.

The 31-year-old struggled at the Wells Fargo Championship with a T56 finish but returned to form at the PGA Championship with an excellent T9 place.

He could not replicate that form at the Charles Schwab Challenge, missing the cut but posted a decent T32 result at the Memorial Tournament.

The world's 22nd-ranked golfer is making his debut at the LIV Invitational Series.

Ancer can feature prominently in Portland if he can reproduce any of that form.

Sam Horsfield

Sam Horsfield started his year with a solid T12 finish at the Abu Dhabi Championship and a T4 place at the Dubai Desert Classic.

The 25-year-old was absent from greens for three months after he had to withdraw from the Saudi International but showed no rust on his return when he finished T21 at the Betfred British Masters and then won the Soudal Open in Belgium.

The Englishman did not show any form at the PGA Championship and US Open, missing the cut in both instances.

Horsfield placed fifth at the inaugural LIV International Series in London and will be looking to replicate that performance to get over the finish line in Portland.

Justin Harding

Justin Harding has performed well in 2022 and is a worthy long-shot pick at the LIV Golf Invitational in Portland.

The 36-year-old finished T25 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, T4 at the Dubai Desert Classic, T24 at the Saudi International, T9 at the Ras al Khaimah Classic, T42 Kenya Open and T23 at the Pecanwood Classic in his first six tournament starts.

The South African failed to impress at the Steyn City Championship, missing the cut but refound his touch around the greens with an excellent T5 place at the Qatar Masters.

Harding's next four starts saw him compete all over the world. He placed 7th at the Tour Championship in South Africa, T16 at the Betfred British Masters, T71 at the PGA Championship and 4th overall at Invitational Series England.

On his debut at the LIV Golf Invitational in London, he finished T10.

Harding is flying under the radar in Portland as he has had five top-ten places to his credit and can challenge for the victory this weekend.

Format

An invitational field of 48 golfers will feature at the opening tournament, with a total purse of $25 million up for grabs. There is $4 million going to the winner, while the player coming in last will pocket $120,000.

The players will contest 54 holes instead of the traditional 72 for all the LIV Golf Invitational Series events.

A shotgun start will take place, where the players will tee off simultaneously from different holes.

A 12 four-man team format will run concurrent, with the top three teams earning prize money.

Verdict

Johnson is the favourite to win at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club this weekend and has to be fancied.

Ancer will be competitive in this field and can challenge for the win on his debut.

Horsfield featured in the top five at the first LIV Golf event and will be looking to win for the second time this year in Oregon.

Harding has excellent form and could cause an upset in Portland.
