2026 Supercars Taupō Super 440 Preview & Predictions

Matt Payne will dominate his home round at Taupō, but Broc Feeney will keep the championship fight tight with a strong weekend.

Round three of the 2026 Supercars Championship heads to Taupō for the first leg of the New Zealand double-header, and it already shapes as one of the most important early-season weekends. The 3.3 km, 14-corner anti-clockwise circuit is short, technical and rewards precision, with limited room for error and very few places to recover if qualifying goes wrong.

Taupō proved last year that it rewards drivers who can control races from the front. Broc Feeney showed elite one-lap pace with two poles but couldn’t convert, while Matt Payne and Chaz Mostert capitalised to dominate the races. Payne in particular looks perfectly suited to this circuit, and returning home with momentum makes him a serious threat to control the weekend.

With the Super 440 format in play consisting of  three races, no room for mistakes and a longer Sunday feature, consistency across sessions will matter just as much as outright speed. Championship leader Brodie Kostecki and Cam Waters will also be in the mix, but Taupō feels like a track where specialists can shine.

2026 Supercars Taupō Super 440 Qualifying Tips

Qualifying will be critical at Taupō due to the short lap and limited overtaking opportunities. Track position is everything here, and with multiple qualifying sessions across the weekend, drivers who can consistently start near the front will control their results.

Broc Feeney remains one of the strongest one-lap drivers in the field and should again be a major pole contender after his performance here last year. However, Matt Payne shapes as the most complete qualifying threat this weekend given his comfort at the circuit and ability to convert strong grid positions into results.

Cam Waters should also be firmly in the mix, particularly given his aggressive driving style suits tight circuits. Expect at least one surprise front-row starter as the compressed field creates small margins, but overall, the front of the grid should be dominated by the same core contenders.

2026 Supercars Taupō Super 440 Race Tips

The races will reward clean execution rather than bold strategy. With two shorter 120 km races and a longer 200 km feature, drivers must balance aggression early with consistency across the weekend.

Matt Payne stands out as the best race-day option, particularly given his proven ability to win at Taupō and manage races from the front. If he qualifies well, he is the driver most likely to convert that into multiple wins.

Feeney should again be a consistent podium threat, especially if he can improve his race conversion from last year. Waters and Kostecki remain genuine contenders, while Chaz Mostert cannot be overlooked given his strong history at this circuit.

The key trend is simple: start at the front, stay there, and avoid mistakes.

Verdict

Payne to win the round, Feeney multiple podiums, Mostert and Waters in the mix for race wins.
