2025 Formula 1 Emilia-Romagna GP Preview & Tips
McLaren will continue their dominance at the top level of world motorsport racing when Oscar Piastri takes his fifth race victory of the season and his fourth consecutive chequered flag.
The dominance of the McLaren is apparent and it was this time last season where they began their rise with Lando Norris challenging Max Verstappen for the championship, winning in Miami and coming within 0.725sec of victory behind the reigning world champion in Imola.
The tides have turned it is Verstappen who is chasing Team Papaya at the iconic Italian circuit in 2025, with the Red Bull engineers and Christioan Horner orchestrating small upgrades that have been giving Verstappen more to work with over the last couple of races.
The Imola Circuit requires a lot of downforce with high speeds coming into some low-pace corners and technically tight sections of the circuit. The track should suit the pace of the McLaren, however with most teams coming into the first of three consecutive race weekends in Europe with notable upgrades, there could be a shift in pace between constructors.
2025 Formula 1 Emilia-Romagna GP Qualifying Best Bet
Verstappen has taken their last two pole positions in Emilia-Romagna with a lap of 1’14.746sec in 2024. Both McLarens where within one-tenth of the Red Bull in qualifying last year with Piastri joining Max on the front row and Norris joined by the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
Despite the World Champion, Verstappen not finding the results he would like on race day, the flying Dutchman has out-qualified the McLarens, taking three of the last 4 pole positions.
Ferrari have once again promised the world to their home fans heading into this race, however, they will not have the pace to mix it with Verstappen and the two McLarens.
So who takes the pole? Good question. In the dry I believe that Piastri will have the pace this weekend. Verstappen has had the pace and has proven he is the best driver in an inferior car, however, the Imola circuit requires more speed in the corners and more power out of the bend than the Red Bull can produce.
2025 Formula 1 Emilia-Romagna GP Best Bet
Rain is predicted which means this race could be anyone's. If the weather gods stay away then it will be all about Team Papaya and Mercedes in my opinion.
George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, who is at his home race, are one upgrade away from mixing with Piastri and Norris, and with Toto Wolff missing the race, Mercedes would love nothing more than getting their first win without their head honcho in the garage.
If it is wet, it is certainly going to make things interesting, as we have seen previously at the Imola GP. If it is wet it will neutralise the raw pace of the McLarens and it will be all about the best driver and team that handle the conditions and develop the best strategy.
If that is the case, then it will be a race that Max Verstappen can take and will be in a great position to claim his fourth consecutive grand prix at Imola. Red Bull understands the difficulty of overtaking in Emilia-Romagna and have proven that they are superior when it comes to understanding when and when not to pit.
Piastri is the obvious pick for his fourth consecutive victory but a little early money has to go on Verstappen if the weather turns sour and Red Bull continue with their minor adjustments that have given them slightly more pace.
