2024 Formula 1 China GP Tips

The Formula 1 paddock returns to China for the first time since the Covid epidemic, with the last race at the Shanghai Circuit taking place in 2019. Max Verstappen had only won five F1 races back then but he will now take his 58th victory when he dominates once again this weekend.

The Chinese Grand Prix is going to be one of the most intriguing races on the calendar this year in my opinion with teams having very little relevant data to take with them from 5 seasons ago. Adding to the difficulty of the old numbers is that the Shanghai circuit has been resurfaced which should affect the amount of brutal tyre wear that the teams experienced which will not be understood until they complete the one and only free practice that they are given due to this weekend being a Sprint Race weekend.

The Shanghai Circuit puts a lot of pressure on the tyres with its high-speed corners forcing the cars to turn a lot at speed and even under acceleration at long, sweeping right-hander at the end of the lap.

Teams that can manage their tyre degradation and find the balance in downforce with the high amount of turns without affecting their top-speed on the 1.2km straight will have the advantage this weekend.

Valtteri Bottas  was the last man to take pole position in China, back then in his Mercedes, recording a 1.31.547 lap. A lot has changed since then which is no more evident than the Finn taking the pole.

You would have to be crazy to back anyone other than World Champion Max Verstappen to put in the fastest lap in Shanghai. The three-time Champion has looked unbeatable in qualifying this season and with the engineers and drivers only getting one free practice on Friday to retrieve data and work out their settings for the sprint shootout in the afternoon only making it more difficult to bridge the gap for the rest of the field.

Taking the Verstappen pole position and race winning double is the only way to get any sort of value out of the Flying Dutchman and it is worth it, because that result is going to happen in a lot more grand prix than it isn’t this season.

The Red Bull has the clear advantage in tyre degradation than any other manufacturer in the field and that is where this race will be won or lost, so there is no question about the winner of the race.Sergio Perez will need to qualify again, as he did in Japan, and if so, he will likely be once again the next best behind his teammate.

The battle for the minor position will be an interesting one this race with Ferrari dominating the third step on the podium this season. The question will be which of the Scuderi will be there. Carlos Sainz has outperformed his teammate Charles Leclerc in qualifying and during the race this season and I believe that will continue in China with Sainz taking the vacant podium position.

I can’t see the McLarens being in the fight this week with Ferrari as they have really struggled with mechanical grip in the slower corners and have also not had the same top-speed down the straights as the Italian manufacturer.

2024 Formula 1 China GP Top-Six Finish Best Bet

My roughie of the week will be that Fernando Alonso will break into the top six again this week as things a Aston Martin look to be on the up. We saw the Spaniard put in his best performance of the season, proving impossible to pass once again at Suzuka with George Russell and Oscar Piastri unable to make a move.

Alonso thrives in the tougher conditions and with the sprint race format leaving teams little time to prepare for the main race on Sunday we can expect the former World Champion to rely heavily on his experience, while the Aston Martin looks to be able to compete on tracks that are heavy on the tyres.
