New Zealand Form
After a very convincing series win over West Indies in their last series, New Zealand were always going to face a tougher task against Pakistan. And so it proved to be in the 1st Test.
Batting first, New Zealand struggled to get going until Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor came together. Williamson scored 129 runs and Taylor 70. Henry Nicholls and BJ Watling backed them up with 56 and 73 runs respectively in a total of 431.
The Black Caps then dismissed Pakistan for 239 runs before scoring 180-5 declared in their second innings. The target for Pakistan was set at 372 runs.
The visitors batted well and almost forced a draw. But with 4.5 overs remaining on day five, New Zealand took the final wicket to secure the 101-run win.
New Zealand Team News
Daryl Mitchell lost out for selection in the 1st Test after New Zealand opted for spin bowler Mitchell Santner. Conditions for the 2nd Test will determine whether New Zealand stick with Santner or opt for an extra seam bowler.
Colin de Grandhomme remains injured but Kyle Jamieson’s performances have ensured the team is no weaker.
Neil Wagner picked up a toe injury in the 1st Test but continued to bowl. His fitness will be assessed ahead of the 2nd Test.
Pakistan were very good for large parts of the 1st Test but their batsmen let them down in the first innings. Their bowlers were also very unfortunate early in the match.
Shaheen Afridi bowled superbly in the first innings, taking 4-109 but it could have been so much better. He beat the New Zealand batsmen with regularity but just couldn’t find the edges.
The hosts went on to score 431 runs to which Pakistan could only reply with 239. Mohammad Rizwan scored 71 and Faheem Ashraf 91 runs. The top order failed miserably with five of the top six batsmen scoring under 11 runs.
New Zealand declared on 180-5 in their second innings, setting Pakstan a target of 372 runs. The top order again struggled with both opening batsmen scoring 0.
Fawad Alam almost saved the day with a magnificent 102 runs. Rizwan supported him well with 60 runs.
Shaheed Afridi and Naseem Shah came within a whisker of forcing a draw. The number 10 and 11 batted together for eight overs but with just over four overs remaining, Shah was out and New Zealand won by 101 runs.
Pakistan Team News
Pakistan will hope that Babar Azam is passed fit for the 2nd Test. That will give them a huge boost with Harris Sohail the batsman likely to make way.
Other than that we should see the same team take the field in the New Year.
